Fn cold .....
O.k you cockroach's and mexicans .(whats a ACT person called ) Reminds me of a joke .What do you call a Vico in NSW ?
Someone going to Qld .
Anyway ,it was freezing at work today with a big bad wind-chill .
So is there a trick to riding in those condition ? I'm an ex-Vico so i should know but it's been a while . Apart from the obveious (clothes ,heated grips )
Any tips i have forgotten , like a silk balaclava is as good as an extra jumper ? A newspaper down the jacket ? HOT breakfast ? STay in QLd ?

Re: Fn cold .....
Well Gus, you'd better not pop down here for a while - here's our upcoming lows and highs (actually these have been revised upwards, they were -5c just a day or two ago). It's gonna be a loooooong winter.
13c looks pretty tropical (except no rain for a few days by the look of it).
I only have to commute 10kms - although the fingers start to freeze, the rest is OK. I don't have heated grips and wear just normal clothes under the biking gear. Then I change at work. It might be a different story if I had even, say 20kms, to ride to get to work. Coming home it's probably back down to between 5c - 6c or so but that's no problem, I even ride with the visor up.

I usually have a liner in my dainese jacket, a long sleeve tshirt, a neck sock, and winter gloves. If its nearly freezing, then I might put on my wet weathers (Dri-rider all in ones) just to keep out the wind chill. A lot of swearing usually keeps me warm !!

And I should have mentioned - I save $8.00 parking if I ride, I'm very inclined not to part with $40 per week for the ACT government - they'll spend it on more roadside art pieces (I don't have a photo sorry).

Wish I had my bike here, barely drops below 27c at night. Haven't spotted many big bikes on the streets of Hong Kong. A few big red Ferraris though:-)

Re: Fn cold .....
i always, with all the bullshit layers of clothes i put on, put a spray jacket on over the top(rain coat of a sort) this stops all the wind getting in,and stops the heat getting out,
i`m ridding down to Briz from Gladstone on thursday night( as i always do), and before you think it doesn`t get cold up here(not as cold as south obviously) gympie always gets to 0* ,plus wind chill, and to me thats cold enough...if i don`t use my full one piece rain coat, it stings,if i use it,i usually sweat in it at those temps

Two pairs of long pants ,boots .gloves .

Apparently a fire buy the side of the road is frowned upon by Road Tek .
Wind was from A.C.T mountains .

Gympie! Yes that is a cold place. I can remember pulling up there for fuel one winters morning on the bike. Fuelled up, went into pay , get a coffee, but couldnt even get any words out for the shivering!!!

That really does work I rode through the Snowies wearing a cheapie raincoat and pants and they kept me warm. However, you do get condensation under them and mine froze when I was riding into Melbourne at 3am and just tore off me and then I almost died from exposure.

Yeah Gympies Cold . I live here. i have just invested in a Jett Heated vest. was going to wait to do a review after my ride this weekend but so far so good. Battery powered to Gus so when you are standing on the road. on the lowest setting will run for around 6-7 hrs

Re: Fn cold .....
Looks like the Jett products are limited to the vest and associated baterry packs.
You might be better off looking at the Gerbing range, they have heated sole inserts, pants, coats, and gloves - price is pretty high though (i.e. $640 (USA) plus delivery for a set of pants and jacket).

$149 delivered for the vest
http://www.jett.us.com/
It only heats on your back but i like it . The heat penetrates your body. i have rode to work at 0 degrees and felt nice and snug just with my work shirt vest and jacket

Down to -5.2c this morning. Frost everywhere of course, looking like snow. I'm willing to bet we hit -10c this winter. I won't keep posting our overnight lows but I will if it hits double figures.
