Cost of personalized plates
Hey all,
I received a email from NSW riders, looking for signatures for a petition against the cost of personalized plates in NSW.
If any one is interested in signing on, below is a copy of the letter.
Dear member
In case you are not aware, anyone wishing to place personalised number plates on either their car or motorbike, incur a purchase/order fee of up to $160 and then a recurring annual fee of up to $440.00. These are todays prices and can be expected to increase in future years.
The Roads and Maritime Services (previously known as the Roads and Traffic Authority) have said in the past that these ongoing fees contribute towards road safety. There is a train of thought at the moment that these fees are nothing more than a revenue raising exercise and that it would be a better business plan to abolish the ongoing annual fee and have a once only application/production fee. Most people are content or accept that a nominal fee be charged to supply personalised plates but reject a recurring annual fee structure.
I believe that other states do not charge a recurring fee. If adopted in NSW, this approach would encourage a larger number of applications for personalised plates for both cars and motorbikes and may well be revenue positive.
There is a petition opposing the increase in the cost of personalised number plates and the manner that the cost is recouped ie an annual ongoing fee for the life of the plate. I am happy to pay a premium to purchase a special plate, but will not subscribe to a fee structure that charges annually for the privilege. As mentioned earlier, the annual fee may increase in the future. No thanks.
If you agree, then please sign the petition at:

Re: Cost of personalized plates
Personally I think personal plates are a waste of money. Not only to buy them in the first place but the fees incurred when transferring them to your next vehicle.
I also prefer to travel without any obvious distinguishing marks on my car or bike.
However I respect the view that others like them and that annual fee is obscene. If they are trying to say that the fee is for road safety then why doesn't everyone pay it?

Here in WA they are about $300 one off cost. When I bought mine about 15 years ago they were $200 and thats it. Haven't paid anything else since apart from $100 to get them re made when we bought the new car a few years ago.

I've just rang QLD Dept of transport and it apparently is a one off payment. I guess QLD wins again .
For those who may be interested in personal plates and do not want to be on the phone listening to elevator music for 13 minutes like I was the direct number is 136356.

Got mine on the bike, present from the wife, one off fee. you think it would be half the price because a car has two plates plus they are smaller (silver on black) i like them anyway

The NSW ongoing fee for these plates are an absolute rip-off. Would never ever get them. And as Madmax said its best not to be easily recognised by personal plates.

Re: Cost of personalized plates
Yeah my rego is due today. I'm not paying $100 A YEAR for the plate. The last time I was in the RTA, I was there for 3hours and 45minutes .
So I'm handing mine in =time . I hope every one in NSW does.
