I was looking under the seat today at where the tookit goes wishing the area was bigger .I noticed those two black knobs taking up space.
I took them off to see what they do .Took me a while to work it out .Anyone like to have a Guess ???
I'm surprised no -one has asked this question or am i the only one who was confused by them .

Those little black (4) rivet type things i thought had to be drilled out and replaced .Lucky i read the manual first for once .They are clever.

Some sort of dampener? Vibration supressors for the rear frame?

Bingo ,thats my call .They bolt in just below the grab handle .I dont have pillion pegs so ive removed them to gain more under seat space .

At first i thought they were part of the Euro. model for a charcoal pollution gear .

If they are dampeners, then next time you go for a ride - see if you notice any "buzzing" making its way thru your seat.
...could you spin em over and mount them on the outside of the rail?

Thats a good idea .If you want to keep them on . I cant see them affecting the pilot seat though ,too far away .I'm thinking
grabbing the vibes before they get to the pillion handle .

I think they are reverse energy polarizers - without them the harmonics set up in the subframe will cause the bike to spontaneously erupt into a massive fireball when you exceed 100 mph. drunken

Yes there is slightly less buzz with them on according to my co pilots but I still took them off and kept them off for the space giving effect.
The GSX650F doesn't get them, hence the lower price for the bike.

There strange. Empty More space for Gus

Post  aussie Fri 05 Aug 2011, 7:33 pm

This one is for you Gus. I had the tank and side panels off to do some maintenance and I noticed a large void which in the right hands could be converted to extra storage space. The battery, original, on my (2010) is a lot smaller in depth than the space designed to carry it. It is carried in a tray suspended from the frame rails but the original tray is 70/80mm below this. If the new tray was removed the battery could sit a lot lower and free up some storage space.

I have looked at that but not keen on cutting thing in case i dont like it or want to reverse it .Muffler and axe dont count .
It would be good for hiding drugs if you were that way inclined .They (police) brought the dogs out once when they pulled over my girlfriend .
I was a little way behind .Obviously i didnt know her and rode past laughing my head off . She saw the funny side. Razz

So that is what that lower tray is for .I did think it was a strange design .

I'm no expert as I don't have ABS but from what I've read (on this forum as well as others) the extra space is for the ABS unit. Those of us without ABS have the option to modify the battery box, lower it (the battery), and then use the space above for storage. I read on another forum where someone had made their own battery box to get this space advantage.

The lower tray is where I've mounted the controller and pump for the Pro-Oiler.
