Bolt question
Can i replace the bolts that hold the front brake calapers to the forks with stainless steel ones ? Or is the shear capacity less with s\steel
than it is with what ever Suzuki has fitted. Its an 8mm diam m\thread.
I believe its a bit of a no-no.

Re: Bolt question
I would like to replace the bolts on the front end with stainless 'button heads '.Unfortuneately i believe its a 'no should do 'because stainless
is not as strong as steel .With that in mind i gave the heads a 30 sec. buff on a wheel ,not as good as button heads but better.
here is a comparison.(its raining )

I believe that the caliper mounting bolts are grade 8.8, which have a tensile strength of 800 mpa, or 116000 psi, and depending on the grade, your typical stainless steel bolt range in tensile strength between 482 and 551 mpa, or 70,000 to 80,0000 psi.
I personally don't think that even at the lower tensile strength of stainless steel, that on a bike like the Bandit that they would ever fail in a shear type of load, which is what they are subjected too. I know TastyNuts (ProBolt) sells replacement polished S/S nuts with the same type of head as the stock steel bolts.

Re: Bolt question
Thanks DB .I've replaced the 4 lower pinch bolts and the 4 lower triple clamp bolts with button head (S\S) seeing there is very little load on them.
The way brakes are set up these days there is no way i can see a problem with s\s on the calipers .But i'm not a metal eargy person ,what are they
called .?

Hey Gus, whenever I've seen stainless bolts online they recommend an anti-sieze compound ( like never-seez) during assembly.

Re: Bolt question
I have heard they can "bind" ,i used them on my 1200 and never had a problem. However they were mainly for light items .
Today after replacing 8 bolts with S\S button heads i decided i liked the polished suzuki hex. head better so they all went back in.

Re: Bolt question
Nothing but the best tools for me. Polishing wheel. Exhaust bracket was made with a hacksaw and file.
Now go out and polish.
I know i'm getting picky but i also think the rear end looks better without those tiedown knobs sticking out . Replaced with a S\Steel button head.
While i'm being picky, why are the hoses to and from the rad. cut so short !Would look much better butted up tight to the rad.

Re: Bolt question
You guys are getting more picky than the sportsbike riders with the bling.
My Bandit looks like it has had a hard time. I leave the racks on although they don't look fantastic, but I woudl much rather practicality over looks. If I wanted looks then I'd be riding something else for sure.
BTW... I take it you guys don;t get scuff marks on your rear set plates? My Sidi's have polished mine, so I can't be bothered painting them

Re: Bolt question
Its only me thats so picky. It goes with making surfboards, one blemish and the customer will not accept it, or want $100 off.
I will say Suzuki's metal threads and fastners have got so much better than they used to be (plastic). No more 5 spacers to fit the back wheel .
A centre stand, ABS ,a great motor, the price lots of other good things there. So why cut the hoses 20mm too short.
You will see i havnt cut down the rear guard ,havnt got tiny blinkers ,have a fender extender ,have heated grips ,chain oiler so its not all bling
and no practicallity .All the mods i've done this week would be struggling to cost $40. Besides IT WONT STOP RAINING.
My G\friend wants to know why i'm so fussy with my bike but the car looks like the above bench grinder.

I bought some of those self adhesive carbon fibre looking ones off EBay about a year ago. I figured if they were crap there was nothing lost. There's not a mark on them, still sticking well and I quite like the look of them:

Re: Bolt question
You win. I agree. How's the rattle can paint holding up? I have been thinking about some judicious powder coating in a hard wearing satin black

That was me a week ago. First chance out. Massive rain storm and surface flooding. Grrrr. Mind you, didn't bother the bandit.
