Fork Upgrades
Going to put new springs in my girl, and to get ready, i want to get some steel or alloy tube to make a suitable spacer.
Does anyone know what the outside diameter of the oem tube is ? I have got 32mm tube, which i think maybe thats all the oem one is
and it sits on washers to keep it happy with the spring.
I was also thinking that PVC pressure pipe might be strong enough, but its about the same size anyway....
Cheers

Yeah...bailed on the PVC pipe....my old SV had plastic spacer tubes standard...but it was different plastic.
Had a suggestion from another page that even a spacer that goes under the cap nut down to the top slotted retainer plate.... Would actually work I suppose if it was as big in diameter as the nut edges.

Re: Fork Upgrades
Slapped a set of Racetechs into the old girl this weekend.....as it turns out, the kit form Racetech comes with a length
of tube in it... Awesome...
So 1.0kg springs, the guys at Shock Treatment suggest 10mm preload from the top of the internal thread on the tube, to the bottom of the cap.
Also, 110mm oil height. with 5w fluid.
I was running 10w at 130mm on the old springs and it rode a bit harsh, hard to describe, but yeah just shaking its head the whole time.
Oil height might have made a difference, maybe closer to standard would have been better. The stock spring takes up so much room
in the leg it was probably leaving no room for the air...
Anyhow, i chose to use 7w Ipone fork oil....and at the standard preload setting form the manual, the ride is so nice.
I was thinking the back end was having real issues, but, it was a classic case of the head wagging the tail, the rear feels lots better now.
Will let the springs settle in for 1000k or so and then maybe alter the preload, or the oil height or weight....
Steers into bends so much better..

"stock spring takes up so much room"
Do you mean in diameter or length?
(Looking at changing springs on my 31 yo gsx1100g- they bottomed out under brakes when new - will need to measure once out & probably cut something to length)

Re: Fork Upgrades
Length, and the fact that the coil windings are more than double the amount.... The racetech ones, taking into account they are 70mm shorter, have probably 60% of the displacement volume or less... Would be interesting to drop them into a measuring tube and see how much fluid they displace....and then the Racetechs...

Re: Fork Upgrades
So, number 10, which is the external top-out spring isn't on yours ? Must be a different cartridge with an internal spring
it doesn't really have any affect on oil displacement anyway, as it is full submerged regardless.
