radiator leak Empty radiator leak

Post  stevemcc Tue 25 Jan 2022, 11:56 pm

Hi all. I had an off several months ago and thought my radiator was not too badly damaged. Seems the damage has surfaced today as it appears to have lost coolant and fluid all over (rear tyre noticed first with a small slide as I entered the freeway. I blamed some oil on the road!) then fluid squirting up into windscreen and over my visor. Then the temp light. So home now and contemplating the next step. Anyone removed a radiator before for repairs? Would you recommend replacing or repairing? Other thoughts?

Hi,
Haven't removed one,
Would replace, original price will make you cry. Could go 2nd hand or chinesium brand.
Sure others will respond.

Well I got the old one out and have found the issue. Hot day yesterday and the main (larger) fan must have come on - rubbing through the cores as in the pic below.
But as I was removing the radiator, one of the plugs came out and I am not sure where it came from (the one I am holding). I have looked around the wiring loom where it was clamped (under the front of the fuel tank/ just behind the steering, but cannot see anywhere it might plug into.
Any ideas how I might find this out?

On my 07 1250S, I can only see 1 set of wires. Will rummage through manual later & let you know if I see something.

May need to wait for someone else re wires, I appear to have one set only. Looks like fan shroud did the damage, so may be possible to repair at local radiator place.

Finally worked it out. It connects to the temperature switch mounted in the radiator. You can see the 2 cables together in earlier photos. I had already disconnected it earlier which was why it was not plugged in when I removed the radiator!

MadmaX did one on his 1250FA a few years ago, rad guard rubbed through, he did a repair first and IIRC ended up replacing it later

My 07 1250 S was off the road for a prolonged period due to rad damage after I came down to Earth. Here's what I learnt (I'm not much of a mechanic).

The bent rad was a source of doubt. Mate finds me a pirate one on E-Bay. Here's how to play the E-Bay game.
  • They advertise a price of US$ 100.
  • I apply.
  • They keep sending me mails saying my "bid" has been topped, usually by about US$1 -2; would I like to increase my bid? ("You have X hours until bidding closes.")
  • When I click this is Taurus faeces, I stop bidding.
  • The "deadline" passes.
  • A day or two later, I receive a mail: would I like to buy at at the last price I bid?
  • I agree, submit card details, and some time later, my new rad arrives.
  • There is a trivial amount of duty to pay (lucky me; where I live, the duty can equal the price of the item).

It's Chinese. Proudly so. The accompanying literature guarantees it is Made In China.

I get my mate to fit it. (Told you I'm not a mechanic.)

This was in 2018. Three & a half years, and many touring kays later, all sweet. I am right now planning a hot-weather trip. 5 000 km, solitaire.

Now then. here's something you need to know.

When I was shaking down my bike after a prolonged, i.e., 4-5 year, period of inactivity (low on $$,you understand?) followed by a revival and resumption of riding, one of the teething probs was that the bike spontaneously dumped her coolant all over the deck after a ride.

I limped to the dealer.

He called a day later. Come fetch your bike.

Bikes don't like being unused. The thermostat had gotten stuck. He didn't charge much, so maybe he just persuaded the old one with a mallet or something.

Since then I have done 8 - 9 000 km of touring, some summer and some winter, and am now planning a 5 000 km trip, solitaire.

So my E-Bay radiator works.

One more thing. Those CR7E (EK?) plugs seem to be a weak point, so either replace them before setting off, or carry spares.

Test your rad, check your plugs, enjoy your ride.
