Yamaha r6
I was searching Gumtree the other day looking at bikes for sale in Tasmania . I like to see whats available and what people think they are worth . No real interest in buying anything ,just tire kicking .(or is that Gumtree kicking )
I came across an add for a 2004 Yam r6 going for $1000 because it had no compression so wouldn't start . Add said ,needs a re-build , 53000kls .
I had no interest in a r6 after just selling a gsxr600 and thinking it was "not for me ".
Now Yamaha make good bikes so no compression at 53,000 kls just didn't seem right to me . I rang the owner and said "are you sure that's the problem ,sounds weird to me ." . He said he had a written report from the bike shop with low compression on all cylinder and it wouldn't start .
Unwilling to pay for a rebuild he had bought a new bike and wanted to get rid of the Yam .
I offered to give a second opinion for free even offering to pick bike up and returning for no charge .. He was over the whole Yam drama and said "no thanks " .. I figured i'd "talked the talk " so I backed myself and offered $900 .
Picked it up the next day .

Definitely ,I have the printed report in front of me . A total fuck up .Thing is other people offered him $500 for the bike . I just thought I could retrieve my $900 in parts if it was stuffed . He said it was starting and then wouldn't . Well that not rings ,they don't go shit over night . I explained that to the owner before purchase so my conscience is clear .

Re: Yamaha r6
I may have had a win here (remains to be seen )but its not always the case .
The tl1000r which had a busted gearbox , tl1000s same ,gsx550 same , Kawasaki 250 bent frame , vf750 seized motor ,replacement motor stuffed ,bmw k100 caught fire ,and the list goes on . Only the Kawasaki went to the tip . The vf's should have ,what pieces of shit .

Re: Yamaha r6
Howdy Gus,
Just reading your postings and curiosity got the better of me so I visited the R6 forum
There are some very interesting people giving some more than helpful advice
One reference was the engine max rpm was 17,500 rpm. That would sound more like an angry mosquito than a motorcycle engine
Another forum member asked
Would I damage the engine if I rev up to the red line while in neutral/with the clutch pulled in?
What would possess anybody to do such a thing ?
These sort of comments come from very young or people that don't own a motorcycle
I think that would be a fun bike to own if I was 20+ years younger
Good luck with your project, Gus. I'm sure it is in good hands.

Re: Yamaha r6
I hated the gsxr600 . No power down low and ballistic up top .The guy I sold it to got booked for speeding in the first two weeks he had it and had to sell it .
I swapped it (gsxr600) for 3 bikes I didn't want . I figured it would be easier to sell one bike than 3 . Only did about 80kls on it and swapped it for a Honda v-tec 400 .

Good on Ya Gus. Thats how I roll too, mostly to my detriment.
I dont buy and sell bikes, untill they are broken, again to my detriment.
But I can sleep well at night knowing I've been honest and havn't ripped someone.

Re: Yamaha r6
Gezzuz you lot are getting ripped off over there, for my 1250 I pay $410 a year for combined rego and CTP, if I was outside of metro Adelaide it would only be $357, that's any bike over 660ccgus wrote:This is now my general run-around . $180 a year rego against the Bandit $630 which I sold .
251-660cc
50-250cc and
under 50cc (is that really a motorbike )
all get progressively cheaper
If it was over 30 years old and I wanted it on historic, the 1250 would be $226.19 for 36 months rego, less than $100 a year
Re: Yamaha r6
Good score , love your daily transport and are they GSX 250 E's or 400's ?
