Yoke Protector
The Bandits previous owner obviously had a key/tag attached to their bike key.
Hence when I got the bike the yoke was all scratched up. It was annoying me so I thought I'd fix it.
Just polish it out, no big deal right? I didn't realise that there was a coating on the yoke so polishing just took off more coating and looked terrible.
I ordered a Yoke protector from UK ebay seller: carbmoto for a whole $32 delivered.
It arrived today. Seemed to be of high quality, sticks well but I was still bale to move it a little to get the positioning right. Will be interested to see how it holds up over time. Installation was simple just a wipe down with rubbing alcohol and stick it on. Its not 100% perfect (installation fault) but I'm happy with it.
I am thinking of going full blackout on the bike later on, replacing the rearsets, pillion pegs/holders/ levers and bars in black so this kinda fits in with that theme.

Re: Yoke Protector
I put one on my yoke after my keys scratched the metal. A matching fuel cap and tank protector were also added for not much more.

Looks good, mine is scratched up too. Do you have a link to the e-bay seller? The ones I could see did not have the extra part for around the key.Lynchy wrote:The Bandits previous owner obviously had a key/tag attached to their bike key.

Re: Yoke Protector
If you are looking to buy more, try 3M vinyl wrap.
I got a piece of clear sheet, about a square metre for nothing, just an offcut from another job.
It is used extensively for car signage and lots of other commercial applications so there are lots of offcuts if you ask nicely.
If you recall your skills at paper cutting at kindergarten you are on the road to success.
I use a rectangular piece as a tank protector at the back of the tank where your clothes (and leather belt!) can rub.
My material is 70um thick but it is available up to 200um.
I have been advised to replace it within 3 years otherwise it can do permanent damage to the underlying surface.
Google "3M vinyl wrap" for more info.

Thanks mate,
I was originally going to get the 3M carbon wrap until I saw this. and thought that pre-cut is easier lol
I'm secretly toying with the idea of getting the whole bike wrapped in a matte black but will have to wait and see.

Re: Yoke Protector
I don't think the process is "rocket science"
It's your money, so do with it what you will.
I suggest you visit a local sign writing shop before you make a significant financial decision

Do you mean wrapping the whole bike or the yoke protector? $30 doesn't seem too steep?
No idea on bike wrapping costs. I'm going to wrap/tint the screen first and based on how that goes will make the decision on DIY'ing the wrap or not.

Re: Yoke Protector
I suggest you visit one of your local sign shops and check out their scrap bin.
I found it was pretty straightforward when you take it slowly.
I used a squiry bottle with some dishwashing soap in it and "squeegee'd" (is there such a word?) with a piece of rubber sheet.
I used a hot air gun on the tighter curves and got a result which I scored at 5 out of 10. I think a bit more practice would improve things.
The best part is you can remove the film (maybe with a bit of heat) and reapply it.
Might be good to get some scrap bits and vinyl wrap your neighbour's pussy cat for practice before you tackle the bike.
Note to MM
I cannot find the original article that suggested removing the film within 3 years. On the 3M site it suggests up to 7 years but I think that depends on the type of vinyl.

No mate,
Super easy - wipe down the are with alcohol and stick it on top. It goes over/around everything, nothing requires removal.
Cheers
