Rusty rear axle spindle and bearing race Gsx 1250
Hi chaps,
I took out my rear wheel the other day to replace the tyre and fit some new brake pads only to discover my axle spindle was quite rusty and needed a fair
bit of persuasion to come out due to some corrosion on the spindle and one of the bearing races. The wheel spins freely and there is no play or grinding in the bearings. I think this is due to over zealous cleaning of the bike on my part as she doesn't get to see too much rain. My question is should I coat the axle on re-assembly with anti-seize or regular bearing grease ? Should I be concerned ? Bike has 29000 kms on it
many thanks for your comments and greetings from Belgium.

I'd use a smear of no melt grease such as wheel bearing grease designed for disk brake hubs.
Re: Rusty rear axle spindle and bearing race Gsx 1250
Wonder what that resulted from? My 1250S 2010 has 90,000+ kms on it now and no similar problems. I'd use ultra fine wet and dry to erase the rust and re-grease it with lithium grease (only because that is what I have in the shed, ie not scientific).

Thanks for the replies, I might change the bearings over the winter when the bike is off the road just to put my mind at rest, never pressure washed the bike, but I do get the hose on it every month or so and give it a good clean, probably stop doing that now.
cheers

I use a smear of anti-sieze grease on my axles as they are not moving parts; dunno if my logic is correct, but it works.

nothing wrong with that logic

Must admit ............from the first Tyre change , I have lightly greased the axles when re-fitting the wheel .

I'm pretty sure my wonderful haynes manual states that you should grease your axles
