Who has, Stage 2 open airbox or pods 1200/1250
So...I`m still playing the carby tune thing, and have decided to do the "open airbox Stage 2"
Still playing with jet sizes, and needle heights, but bloody hell... its just too loud!!!
Induction noise is very annoying, to the point, I think I need ear plugs for around town.
How`s anybody else coping????

Basically the only bit of my air cleaner top left is the section that clamps the K&N filter down. I've never notice any induction noise to be honest, don't know if the 1250 is less "throaty' than the oil burner ?
BTW This is the 1200 cleaner rather than the 1250, it has a little more filter element surface area for some reason.

It`s the same arrangement Barry. But I would say, it is a little more open, as in, there is no obstructions at all over the air filter.
I was originally experimenting with an airbox lid, and as I have two of them, I`ve now cut one back to do the full open. But I didn`t cut it back as far, and left a little more height to the sides for strength.
But going from a: Standard- Then remove snorkel- Then modify my other one with a big velocity stack on it- Now open lid...
Its all been increasing in noise, but the open lid seems a bit too much for my liking.
Still playing with the tune, but the open lid has definitely picked up the low to mid torque, which I was having hassles with.
So what was the length of time, between when you bought your bike, and did the "Stage 2" Barry?
I`m surprised you can`t notice much of a difference in noise?
Just a thought, did you do the exhaust the same time you did the Stage 2?

You know what they say, do one thing at a time to see what the difference is plus or minus .......thru that concept out the window...
Did the airbox, K&N, secondaries, TPS and balance checks (didn't need any adjustment), Arrows, and PC-V all at the same time, followed a day or two later with a dyno tune. Had the Yoshi R77 on for a couple of months prior to this as well as the PAIRS removal after got over the annoying decel popping. I went with the full crew-cut on the air box, but did buy a replacement top just in case I needed to backtrack. Also have a 17 tooth front cog to help with getting of the line due to the extra weight I'm carrying - also helps with the sidecar
The tuning had to be done on a car type dyno, again due to the rig not fitting on a standard bike setup, and we had to angle the chassis to clear the side wheel from the right roller, not sure if that lost a couple of hp - tell myself it did to inflate the numbers in my head. Anyway, with all the mods she pulled 125.6 rwhp on a warm Autumn evening in Canberra, with Brett from Moto Garage doing his PC-V magic. I've got the Auto-tune wide-angle exhaust sensor installed and programmed up, but to date I haven't switched over to it.

Ahh..ok, did the whole shemozzle all at once.
That's where you wouldn`t have noticed the difference with airbox alone.
mmmmm
I think more tinkering with the other lid.

I think Reardo did his.
Re: Who has, Stage 2 open airbox or pods 1200/1250
I've got all those mods and find the induction noise to be fine. I hear more wind than induction noise anyway when riding so it doesn't bother me one bit. Only way to fix it is go back to the original snorkel setup.

I had an arse of a time tuning my Bandit with the top cut off the air box. I put pods on it and it was like a different bike. I don't remember an extra loud induction noise.

Re: Who has, Stage 2 open airbox or pods 1200/1250
This is what I`ve been experimenting with. It is still in the infant stage, but still using an airbox lid. It was put onto a flow bench,
and as soon as I put the venturi in it, the flow rate accelerated considerably.
Just to clarify...the noise that occurs, is when its under load, say, going up a hill, or of coarse, giving it stick.
When I contacted Dale Walker with suggestions of main jets and needle heights for the way my motor is set up, with the open lid, as per the kit,
I was comparing the characteristics against the two..."Only in the sack of experimenting" you could sense he was thinking, "here`s another idiot trying to reinvent the wheel" and went on to tell me how he has spent up to 5months, in setting the Stage 2 for the 1200.
Fair call.
But I still to this day, have not read anything, anywhere, in which someone has played with venturi-size, length, location, and quantity, of venturi`s, on a 1200 Bandit Airbox lid?.
If someone has this information, then please forward me the link, so I can read it, in depth?
Everyone goes straight to Dale Walker, and with good reason, as his results speak for itself, as he has played, and put the hard yard in.
At the end of the day, it is an experiment, and as I have a spare lid, I will tinker, regardless of the out come. It is throaty, but no where near as loud as an open airbox.
It may actually work, but if you don`t try, you don`t know, with also a quieter result.
I will set the Stage 2, as per Dales kit, until it is the best it can be, and compare the two, until I have exhausted my will, with the other lid.
Comparing the two as it stands, my set up currently, is pulling harder, at peak revs, but lacks the low down torque of Dales set up.
Time will tell

A little bit more research into my obsession into airboxes for anyone of interest.

Ha ha,
I will go down that path one day reddog, with another project.
I`m happy to tinker and dabble in anything.
Don`t try, don`t know!!
But for the moment, I`m trying to reinvent the wheel, to tune the airbox, as they are intended.

Scaramouche on Aussie street bikes is still tinkering with his gsxr1100 blow through setup. Carbs sound like a real pain in the backside to tune for turbo applications. Fuel injection makes it pretty easy it you've got someone with a dyno handy

Re: Who has, Stage 2 open airbox or pods 1200/1250
Yeah, If I went carbs, I wouldn`t do blow through, I`d go draw through.
Its the pressurising of the carb, with blow through that gives great problems.
You can also but a kit from "Mr Turbo" http://www.mrturbo.com/turbo-sys/suzuki/bandit/bandit.html
But if you got FI, and a computer controlling everything, you can dictate your boost per gear change, with a gear sensor.
You certainly don`t want full boost in first gear. Imagine that in the wet???

Re: Who has, Stage 2 open airbox or pods 1200/1250
I used to own a couple of VL Turbo commodores. I can assure you first gear full boost is still good fun, it just doesn't last very long as you need to smash second gear
But as per your comment I am with you, blow through isn't kind on carburettors which are supposed to run at low fuel and air pressure
