how many kms can you expect to get out of original brake pads before replacement is necessary?

I've done 27K and there's still plenty of life left in the originals

There`s no real answer to that.

Are you an aggressive rider?
Are you a city ridder?
Are you a tourer?

Different result for each.

Just keep an eye on them.

I replaced my rear pads and disc, 2 days ago, and I don`t know how long exactly, apart from saying a few years.
The rear was down to .5mm, very close.

Mine had 45k with plenty of life left. I think they outlast the bike.

I've done 73,000kms and have one set of replacements (but I didn't record the kms unfortunately).  But I checked the current sets a few weeks ago and they look like they've got plenty left yet. I'd reckon on about 50,000kms, but, like others have said, a lot depends on your own individual riding style.  For instance, I tend to use a lot of engine braking to minimise brake usage but that makes me slower than some of my buddies in the twisties.  If you're a brake, turn, point and shoot style of rider you'll wear brakes out at a greater rate.

I bought my 07 rig in 2010, and although the brake calipers have been relocated for the Leading Link, the pads themselves weren't changed. I checked them earlier this year with the intention of changing them but they're only ½ worn, so as 2WA said above, depending how you ride they could outlast the bike.

I changed the rear pads a lot sooner than needed to some Yamaha pads to get rid of the wooden feel the Suzuki ones had , but the front pads have now done 47,000 km & still going strong .I commute 50 km a day to  & from work on mine plus the odd trip & weekend blast for a coffee .

An opportunity to replace the old fluid at the same time the pads are replaced. That won't be in the servicing schedule by the way! cheers
