Help with spark
Rolls' old 1200 hasn't missed a beat, since I've owned her.
Two days before rego was due, No spark!
Stand down, neutral, clutch in, kill sw in run, she'll crank but no spark.
Take out any one of the chain of cutouts and she wont crank. So all good with that side of things, as far as my skill level tells me.
Do any of these cut out spark but allow cranking?
Inductive timing light on plug lead. No spark.
Coils test for continuity.
Pulse generator measured 280 ohms and created 6v a/c on digital multimeter, when cranking
Continuity tested between pulse gen and ecu, throttle pos and ecu, ecu to earth, all good.
So. Can I induce a spark from coils?
I tried pulling plug and lead, earthing plug, and trying to get a spark to prove the coil good. No joy.
I don't think that two coils would fail, anyhow.
My conclusion, failed ECU.
Somebody please give me some hope,to believe that it could be something else, by educating me on what else could cause no spark, what to test.
Cheers all.

Re: Help with spark
Hey Bosco,
There was a forum thread this month from GreatDays regarding no spark on a Bandit 600
I responded with an article I found on the VSRI forum regarding an un-documented feature of the ignition switch
Here is the link
http://www.vstrom.info/Smf/index.php/topic,6186.0.html
The same, or a similar switch is fitted to the Bandit. Just to confuse things some bikes switch +12v and others switch ground through this switch contact to the ECU.
According to the 06 Bandit schematic the contact switches a ground to the ECU on the G/B wire (green/black).
I reckon it would be very easy to verify this. Should this not check out it could be as simple as a little corrosion in the switch (it is very exposed!)
As I said at the beginning, I hope I am not wasting your time sending you on a wild goose chase but who knows.
Good hunting

Re: Help with spark
Mighty helpful, Dave.
Thank you.
I appreciate your input. Anything that could even remotely cause this fault, will be investigated. I just need to know what does what.
I only have a Haynes manual, not the greatest.
I know 2Wheels has posted a manual on hear. Looking for it now.
Thank you.

Re: Help with spark
Hi Bosco....
I`m trying to go through the files of my mind here. I`ve got an 03, and I think that's what your is?
The only starting troubles I`ve ever had with mine, are/were minor, but came down to age and weather.
They were: 1/Clutch switch connections loose.
2/Red power cut switch on right handle bar. Had to flick it on and off a few times, then eventually pull it apart and discover the terminals were corroded.
3/ And my biggest problem was, it started cutting out when I was ridding it, and one day wouldn`t start, due to a broken wire from the ignition barrel harness, which I had to buy a new barrel and harness in a complete assembly. It broke due to age from constant turning of the handle bars from left to right, and the harness not having enough slack in it.
Not saying that's your problem, but mine would turn over, but not fire. All because of one wire in the harness broken.

Re: Help with spark
Thanks Dave. I got your link.
Thanks MtBeerwah. Yes she's an 03. I was hoping to find the problem before having to start looking at the front end wiring.
Last time, I found the fairing a right pia to get off and back on.
Given up for today.
Will keep you posted.

Re: Help with spark
Hey Bosco,
Check out page 195 of the pdf. It shows the relevant components of the ignition system.
You made no mention of the ignition fuse #3 or the tip over sensor or GP switch.
I would next confirm there is +12volts on the orange/white wire to either ignition coil and the black wire to the ECU. I understand this eliminates all of the interlocking devices.
If you haven't already done so, check for ground on the green/black at the ECU.
If your day is still in ruins and you feel some 'face to face' discussion may benefit, I am happy to have a Skype conversation to discuss further

Re: Help with spark
Hi Dave.
Ign fuse tests ok. She won't crank without it. Put it back in, cranks away merrily.
12v at coils.
The only test I've done on Gear Pos was to put it in gear with stand down. No crank.
Tip over switch is a great suggestion. I hadn't even thought of it.
I will be investigating it alkng with kill switch and ign switch.
The article about the hidden resistor has me intrigued. If it's not mentioned in workshop manual and Suzuki mechanics don't know about it, How do we test for it? It may be there, itvmay not. I guess the only way is to pull switch apart.
Thanks once again for your time and effort. You're a champ.
