24000km service
Has anyone needed any adjustment to their valves at the 24000km service.Just wondering because it seems like the most time consuming part of the service.I don't have time to do it myself and was just wondering if I could save myself a few dollars by just getting the fluids done and not the valve check.I know what your thinking and yes it is tight think it's like a fishes

Re: 24000km service
Mine has done 72,000kms and hasn't yet required a valve clearance adjustment. One shop told me it would be unlikely to require one early unless the motor was worked hard, a thing that just doesn't happen with the 1250 unless you really want to give it a hard time for no reason. So, I'm thinking that if you just ride "normally" and are working the motor mostly below 5,000 rpm, you probably won't need a valve clearance adjustment until at least 100,000kms. I only know of one 1250 Bandit that has had a valve clearance adjustment done and it has over 100,000kms on it. But hey, I'm not a mechanic and I offer this suggestion with all care and no responsibility.

Re: 24000km service
The book says yes but like everyone else says they're good for 100k without much drama.
Unless you suspect something is wrong I'd leave it and do plugs and filters. Don't be surprised if the plugs look new still.

Inspect forks (for damage to seals) not replace oil. Replace coolant and brake fluid every two years.Chook wrote:I'm pretty sure at 24000 it's due for coolant, brake fluid and fork oil as well
Re: 24000km service
.Thanks for the info was hoping to save dollars from the valve adjustment and putting it into some braided lines and if the budget stretches some heated grips.

Re: 24000km service
When the 48,000km service is due, find the time to do it yourself and save some money. Labour charge to do valve clearance is stupid expensive and not that hard to do yourself.

Think very very carefullyabout braided lines if you have ABSTaxi bandit wrote:.Thanks for the info was hoping to save dollars from the valve adjustment and putting it into some braided lines and if the budget stretches some heated grips.

Yes, braided lines can be bad if you have too much core strength.

I think this thread is the one referred to above:

Cheers!
PS: I changed the front discs on my non-ABS Bandit (purely because I liked the look of "wave style" disc rotors - see below, not because of braking concerns or issues) and with the old pads the braking was immediately better. New pads (organic) are going in next week (the old ones are now worn down enough to be replaced).

Re: 24000km service
I have questions that stem from the OP's one.
I bought my FA at 5 months old. I have done 18,500kms ish since September last.
When I bought the bike I contacted Suzuki NZ to ask about maintaining the factory warranty, (2 years unlimited kms). I am not mechanically gifted and had in mind to use a local mechanic for servicing because 1. he is a really decent bloke who knows his stuff and 2. he isnt that hard to pay.
The response I got was I needed to use a dealer workshop (not necessarily a Suzuki one) for servicing to maintain the warranty and they had to follow the proscribed servicing schedule.
So I decided that it would be best to keep the warranty live and use the place I bought the bike from, they are not Suzuki dealers, they have franchises for BMW, Honda and Ducati. Interestingly I always ask the local Suzuki guys for a quote for servicing and the Non-suzuki place is always cheaper by some margin even though they use Suzuki genuine parts.
I am interested in this thread therefore as the 24000km service will be coming up for me.
So....
a) have I been told a pack of BS by the Suzuki distributors?
b) if I direct the workshop to leave out the valve clearance check surely that means the schedule has not been followed and therefore renders the warranty void?
The 24000km service surely means getting the fairings off and the tank off anyway, how much more time are we talking to so the valve clearance check? Sorry if the question displays my howling ignorance!

I'm not sure what the laws are like in NZ but I'm fairly sure in Australia to maintain your warranty it just needs to be a qualified mechanic and follow the schedule. However my Suzuki dealer didn't do the clearances at 24k as its not listed on the invoice and the total was only $360. Adjusting valve clearances themselves can be a time consuming exercise. I would expect a dealer to add 3-4hours to the service

Re: 24000km service
Valve clearances is at least a 3 hour job. No need for it though, just replace coolant brake and clutch fluids on top of standard service

Re: 24000km service
In theory the valve clearances should become tight when the valves sink into the head, They do not become noisy. The bike will become hard to start as an indication.
I bought my FA in 2010 and was told by the dealer that my warranty stood if I did all my own work. His words
On brakes, I agree on the discs, I run Braking Rotors on the 90 Gsxr and the feel is great, I always run sintered pads on all bikes and new pads with new discs
my 2 cents

Re: 24000km service
the idea that the motor is harder to start is interesting.
One of the things I love about my machine compared to those that came before is that it has fired almost before I have finished pushing the start button, sun, rain, hot or cold it just starts a runs beautifully.
thank you for the input to my questions, I feel more confident now avoiding the 3 hour labour charge!
Maybe its time I learned to be a bit more confident with a spanner.
Cheers
