Action Camera Questions???? Empty Action Camera Questions????

Apologize in advance if this has already been covered.

So I have a Contour Roam, and a GO-PRO.

What do you do about wind noise?

Do you put on an external mic on a lead, and conceal the mic out of the elements or cover the sound pickup, or something??

Obviously you could move the camera, but that limits the view.

I know how to take photos, but the audio thing...I got no idea!!!

Thanks.

(Down loading and up loading is something that I struggle with as well, as I`ve got no skill in computers at all, but that's a whole other subject, for another time.

I have a Drift HD170 (about 8yrs old) and last week my tight arse revealed itself and I bought a GoPro knock off. An SJ4000 wifi.
Looks good. Comes with lots of accessories. Works crap on a bike though. Quite good as a static or hand held wide angle video/still camera but has no hope of handling vibrations and road shocks so it will become a $100 dash cam.

So wind noise and by default engine music Smile
The drift range has external mic sockets. I put my ext mic under the seat Smile
That was before something broke internal after being tossed down the road once too often and now the mic socket doesn't work.
I had a very close look at the GoPro Silver 4 for $495 but I have all the drift mounts and accessories and I think my next action camera will be the Drift Ghost S at about the same price.
So yes if you have the ability to plug in an ext mike put it under the seat or record audio seperately and add it in post production with something like THIS. I'm getting one.

Thanks for reply.

I`ve only tried my contour, which was on top of my helmet, and to be expected, was pretty crap, and I haven`t really given it a once over, to see if you can do the ext mic thing.

As for the pro, I assume you`d be able to get an ext mic, but me being a novice with sound engineering, and probably a tight arse as well, was hoping there were solutions to avoiding doing that, also the annoyance of running leads everywhere, as I can see me getting tangled up in it , and getting the shits, and chucking it.

I guess if its the only true way to get a decent sound resolution, then I`ll do it, but I`m not beaten yet, and I`m a bit stubborn, so I`ll give anything a go.

Cheers.

I did the external mic and it works well. Mine is a Contour HD so old model.

This is the sound on my VTR with the mic in the tail. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t2-3qUEBsEg

Mate you're probably stuck with muting the audio if it's on your lid. Bike mounted is fine for running leads though.

This is shot with a Drift HD170 (1080P) suction mounted on the clutch cover.
Edited and uploaded as 720p for the sake of upload speed.

Edited today after finding some raw video on a backup HDD Smile
Select HD option if you can.

this is why I`ve got the two camers.

the contour is slightly inconspicuous, where as the gopro looks a 57inch TV sitting on your head, and that's why it won`t be going on my head, but on the bike at different points, to get different angles. So I guess I can bow, and get an ext mic for it only.

The roam for me, was intended for legal evidence only, and really only for VID, not sound quality, but it would be nice.

That worked out quiet well 2w, and good cam angle!!

I`ll have a look at that   NZspokes , but on my helmet maybe pushing the limit for me, but good to know of the options

I hated it on my helmet because at speed it would cause my helmet to vibrate. Over 200kph it was nasty. Now I have it mounted to my bars.
