Fuel Prices
The last 3 days 91 has been available in Adelaide for under $1-00 so I thought I'd do a search and see how we compared with other cities.
Costco here has the cheapest fuel in Australia at the moment and I'm sure that's the only reason the others are all so low
Adelaide
Costco Kiluburn $0-99.9 (98 is $117.9)
Caltex/Woolworthes Prospect Road $101.9 (95 is $112.9)
Most other outlets are $1-04.9
Brisbane
$109.3 - $109.9
Canberra
Caltex/Woolworthes Canberra Airport $100.7
Costco Majura $104.7
Everywhere else $124.7
Darwin
$134.9 - $138.9
Hobart
$126.5 - $126.9
Melbourne
$106.9 pretty much everywhere
Perth
$106.7-$107.1
Sydney
$101.9-$102.9

While we've got the cheapest fuel in Adelaide, a lot of our regional centers would love to be paying "only" $124.7Re-Cycled wrote:Newcastle 124.7 (NRMA website)

Yep, much better Chook. I lived there in the 80s. Does Adelaide still close for the weekend at 12:00 pm on a Saturday?

Re: Fuel Prices
That stopped in the 80's, must admit, life was simpler and most people had a "real" weekend, just those in pubs and entertainment venues kept working back then.Kiwisteve wrote:Chook wrote:Don't be stupid, you can always go West of MexicoKiwisteve wrote:spanna wrote:you could always migrate south ...

Convenience is a great thing now though.
Where were you living in SA?

Fuel in USA is priced by the gallon (3.7854 liters). So for regular gasoline we're paying about 52 cents/liter. Nevada and California are two of the highest-priced states for fuel prices.
But, of course, since prices have come down a bit, the politicians are now talking about raising the taxes on fuel again.

52c = AUD .63c add the 50c of GST and federal excise and the price is about the same

wouldn't GST on 63c be 6.3c? The excise would be the biggest killermadmax wrote:paul wrote:Bloody hell that's half our price now it's cheap here , and at one stage we were paying well over 3 times that .............I think our pollies are making a tidy little sum on ours alreadySVDon wrote:I get mine at Smith's.

The GST is applied after the excise. The excise is currently 38.6c so 38.6 + 63 = 101.6 + (10.16 GST) = $111.76
Yes that's right its a tax on a tax.

The actual raw price of fuel is almost exactly the same, as SVDons US$0.52 already included their taxes and excises, I think Don is from Florida so the combined taxes comes to 35c/US gallon or 9.25c/lt in taxes (appolgises if I have the wrong State).
Their raw (untaxed) price is then US 52c - 9.25c = 42.75c/lt, on todays exchange that is about AU 52c/lt
So, plugging that back in: the excise is currently 38.6c so 38.6 + 52 = 90.6 + (9.06 GST) = 99.66c/lt
The difference is all in the taxes, ours is (in AU$) 47.66c/lt tax whilst Don is paying 11c/lt tax.
Re: Fuel Prices
what I was basically trying to say was that without the taxes the price is about the same.
The other thing some people seem to forget when looking at US fuel prices is the size of a US gallon is 3.78lt not 4.5lt

Re: Fuel Prices
I'm in Nevada, but ours is about the same as Florida.
The point, and a good one, is that raw fuel prices are determined on a worldwide market, thus where there is plenty of supply, the price will be about the same. Transportation costs will affect the regional end price considerably - we can see a 1 dollar/gallon higher price at stations that are at the end of the supply line in relation to the pipeline terminal, since trucking the fuel to outlying stations takes a lot of, well, fuel!
The difference in "at the pump" prices, as stated above and supply distances being equal, is almost entirely about the different tax levels that greedy governments choose to impose upon us.
So, I say GO RIDE while we can still afford it, because you know the prices are going back up again, whether caused by more taxes, higher recovery costs, or higher demand.
