1200 Valve Adjustment
Hello all and Happy New Year!
I used the search function and came up empty ... looking for a procedure for the 1200 valve adjustment, can anyone help?
I don't have a manual and can't get out to get one at the moment ...
Cheers,
Roden

Re: 1200 Valve Adjustment
Just one more question ... what is this special tool used to adjust the rocker? I guess it's not a torx or caphead or slotted screw? Is there an alternative or do i need to purchase this from Suzuki?
Thanks again and cheers,
Roden

Re: 1200 Valve Adjustment
The adjustment head is a small square head , a very small spanner would work or you could improvise...............the tool is just a handle / knob with the appropriate square fitting hole in the end of its shaft .Roden wrote:Just one more question ... what is this special tool used to adjust the rocker? Re: 1200 Valve Adjustment
There is also a square box bolted on top of the tappet cover ...............it's easier to take this off to get your cover out ( through right hand side ) the book doesn't mention this !

Re: 1200 Valve Adjustment
I'm sure someone on here has a 1200 manual in digital form.
I'm happy to host it if anyone has one.

I noticed that but didn't think much of it ... ok, if I unbolt that square box will be anything leaping out of there?

Just one more question and I think I'm done lol ... have you managed this procedure without removing the fairing?

Nope there are no ferrets in the 1200 motor ,there is only a thin metal gasket under there .Roden wrote:I noticed that but didn't think much of it ... ok, if I unbolt that square box will be anything leaping out of there?

Re: 1200 Valve Adjustment
Hi Roden,
Paul has given you the valve clearances.
I never bothered with feeler gauges.
The special tools I used were a pair of long nosed pliers and a ring spanner.
I have forgotten the thread pitch of the tappet but I am sure someone on the forum can help.
Let's just assume for a moment that the thread pitch is 0.1mm. To achieve a clearance of 0.1mm you need to back off the tappet lock nut and gently wind the tappet until you have no clearance then back it off 1 full turn (please get someone to confirm the thread pitch - don't rely on my guess).
Hold the tappet with the special tool (long nosed pliers) and tighten the locknut.

Re: 1200 Valve Adjustment
I did on my sons 06 model ( later shape same motor ) but I took off the fairing on my 04 model.............you might get away with only part removal , but it wasn't that hard to do .Roden wrote:Just one more question and I think I'm done lol ... have you managed this procedure without removing the fairing?

Re: 1200 Valve Adjustment
Dave - thanks mate, good to know about the long nose pliers trick ... I guess using thread pitch only gets sticky if the pitch is 1.25mm or something obscure but hopefully it is as you suggest, otherwise I do have feeler gauges. My reason for doing this is worsening difficulty with cold starting, I'm pretty sure some valves have closed up, I've been running it hard up and down the F3 over the past three months.
Paul - again thank you! Your info is invaluable at a time when I had nothing
Cheers,
Roden
