Battery Types - Anyone Used This One?
The TRX battery is dead. Has anyone had experience with this brand of battery, which, at $50 delivered, is half the price of the next cheapest.

Re: Battery Types - Anyone Used This One?
For the amount of time the TRX gets used it's probably ok. I have a cheapy in the VTR and it doesn't hold good charge if left a week. To me that's ok. I have a tender I can tickle it with and I'll do that tonight for tomorrow's commute. First one in a week.
Re: Battery Types - Anyone Used This One?
Yes, the central issue is that it doesn't get used much so the battery doesn't get charged often. I think I'll be forced to buy one of those more sophisticated chargers that maintain battery voltage without destroying the battery. I did have mixed results with Motobatt batteries. One worked brilliantly and the other was a dud - the latter was in a 4 wheeler that didn't get used much, so I'm not inclined to pay double the price of the cheapie in this instance.

I have a Ctek battery tender. In theory you can leave it hooked up but I don't. Just give the VTR a tickle the day before if it's been sitting 5 or 6 days. It has a pulse function if it detects a fully charged battery. I can send a link and it was only $60 plus an extra pair of leads for the other bike.

That sounds like the right sort of price mate. Please do send a link. Cheers.

This is mine Dave Click Here Bairnsdale seller. Could pick it up next weekEwok1958 wrote:That sounds like the right sort of price mate. Please do send a link. Cheers.
The next step up has slightly more punch for about $100 but mine is fine for what I need.
I fitted the eyelets and bought a double USB power plug that attaches to the Ctek plug (fused) on about 1m of lead. Had that on the Bandit for GPS/Phone charging. Its installed on the VFR now too.

Thanks mate - catch ya on Tues (or returning Wed if that suits better).

Re: Battery Types - Anyone Used This One?
I've got the same model ctek and I leave it pretty much permanently hooked up to the Bandit it because it seems to have a small drain at rest.
It will flatten itself over 3 or 4 weeks.
The kato seems to have no drain and can go months without charge.
I've had a Motobatt in the Bandit for 60000k/ 4 years, including a week at full discharge when an Oxford controller fritzed itself. The battery was reading 0.04v and theory said it would only be good for a doorstop but, to my great surprise, it charged straight back up and has been fine ever since.

Re: Battery Types - Anyone Used This One?
Was just reading up on the CTEK chargers on webBIkeWorld and got sidetracked onto looking up the Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) type motorcycle batteries. These seem to be a low maint, high reliability, low enviroment battery, that doesn't need the constant trickle charging that low-use lead acid batteries crave. They are not cheap, on eBay at about $200 delivery.
However, as good as these batteries are, it is due to their makeup, that they cannot be used with chargers that have a "desulfate" mode as the high voltage spikes in this mode can cause damage to the LFP battery.
Unfortunately, CTEK do have this mode (sometimes referred to as Mode 1 in their literature) to condition the batteries prior to charging, hence these "smart" chargers cannot be used with the new "smart" batteries.

Yes Barry is quite correct as a mate with a Road King recently found out. He returned a 4 week old "smart" battery for warranty and was knocked back because of his trickle charger.
No maintenance lead acid will do me fine thanks.

That's a bit extreme, just get another battery and stay off the drugs, please!gus wrote:My lithium battery died last week , I'm going back to acid .
Re: Battery Types - Anyone Used This One?
Yep, good old fashioned lead acid batteries have stood the test of time.
I always buy Yuasa, a bit more expensive but I have a real aversion to pushing motorbikes.
Also I have "killed" both a Projecta and a Jaycar smart battery charger.
My current one is Ctek XS4003 which I understand has been superseded by MXS3.8.
It has a 0.8 amp setting for motorcycle batteries as well as a 3.8 amp output for car batteries.
I've used it to charge some 250Ah deep cycle batteries and it seemed OK with that. It took a few days though!

Gus what happened to the lithium? I had an issue with mine, but all it took was to jump it off a good battery for a minute and then It'd take chargegus wrote:My lithium battery died last week , I'm going back to acid .
