'07 1250 went DEAD when I tried to start it !! Help !! Empty '07 1250 went DEAD when I tried to start it !! Help !!

Post  captbruce Sat 10 Oct 2015, 2:07 am

Hello, SBA Forum.

You guys really helped me when I got a "basketcase" Bandit in Jan. 2013.
I will never forget how great you guys were to me then.

Well... I have since put on 5000 miles, and it's been trouble FREE... till this morning.

I went to start it and everything was good... Key "ON" all lights came on and I pressed the Start lever and PFSST !!
Everything went DEAD !!
Now when I turn the key nothing comes on. I mean NOTHING.
When I turn the key off the Tach bounces to WOT then returns it zero.

The Battery tests 12.7V, 30 amp Fuse checks OK; 12.7v at the fuse block terminals.
All the smaller 10-15 amp fuses check OK too.

Am I missing something ?
Is there another fuse I can't see ??

Maybe a bad Ignition switch ??

I need HELP !!

This is a good simplified circuit diagram of the starting system, shows where each of the switched are in relation to the starting wiring;

Use a Test pencil light (point one end, light in middle, alligator clip for earth )
Start at battery with ignition on .Trace power lead to next connecter (starter relay ?) Test for power going in and out .
Keep tracing power ,somewhere there is a in but no OUT . Or ,jump a few hard to get at bits and test for power.
With a multi meter you need 3 hands ,pencil lights are brilliant . In all my tool kits $5-10 . Steel one's best .

Just a guess.  But check your regulator rectifier. Then there is the side stand switch. The clutch switch. The kill switch. The angle sensor switch.  Have I missed any ?   Best of luck.

My guess is a burned out ignition switch seeing as nothing comes on.

'07 1250 went DEAD when I tried to start it !! Help !! Empty The BANDIT is FIXED !!

Post  captbruce Sat 10 Oct 2015, 8:35 pm

This Forums response is unparalleled !!
Thanks you so much.

My friend, came over and said, "It's probably the battery"
I told him it meas. 12.7v and he said it looks OLD, so we swapped it out for a NEW one (I just got) out of a Kawa KLR650 (I currently own 5 bikes)
The new battery measured 1/2" taller but otherwise the same measurements and the bike started as usual !!

I tried to put the seat on and it would not "seat" properly so I assumed it was hitting the top of the taller battery, so I put the old battery back in and noticed I left the terminal screws atop the seat latch mechanism and that is what was stopping the seat from "Seating", but I connected the old battery back and "Pfsst" NOTHING, so I put the new battery back and the seat "seated", now the bike is FINE.

So it was just the BATTERY !!
Thank, God !!

Sorry for the false alarm.
I really do appreciate your responses.
You guys are GREAT !!

Best to you ALL.

Ride Safe !!

Multimeter is fine, some batteries get a break in an internal connection, so open circuit they show full voltage but as soon as you add a load it breaks the circuit. One clue is to observe the battery when you hit the starter, they will usually bubble vigorously inside one cell.

The first one I had was intermittent so took a while to diagnose.

It pays to get an accomplice to meter the battery while you hit the starter.

'07 1250 went DEAD when I tried to start it !! Help !! Empty The "Pfssst" was a clue !!

Post  captbruce Sun 11 Oct 2015, 5:12 am

The Battery still reads 12.7V it just won't carry the load of the starter.
If everything was quiet and you listened close, the "Pfssst" sound was coming from near the Negative terminal of the battery.

Now I need another battery for my KLR...

Bike if FINE and ran great as always.

Sorry for the false alarm.
Next time I sort things out better before I alert the Forum.

Thanks for being there.

12.7v but not enough amps to turn the starter. I've seen that happen with a car battery in the past.

Hello, SBA Forum....

captbruce, here in sunny Key West, Florida USA

It's been 2-1/2 years since my last post and my Bandit, was running fine, the whole while.

I left it here in KW, for 9 months and came back a few weeks ago, and it started right up !!
It cranked a little slow so I decided to charge the battery. It's been two weeks now, and the last few starts I heard a "Fssst" under the seat, before it started.
A couple times is idled rough for 15 seconds or so them "Purred" like it always does.
But I could tell the battery was getting weaker.

Yesterday, I went to start it and it cranked, but would not start, it was spinning slower than usual.
I cleaned the battery connections, and checked the battery voltage it was 12.7V
Now, it won't start at all... Cranks slow... tries to fire every once in a while.

So I guessed it was the battery AGAIN !!
2-1/2 years later.
The battery I put in was out of another bike, so it wasn't new.
I order a new one it should be here Wednesday.

I think it has the voltage but not the Amperage to spin the crank and kick the ECM in.
I hope that the battery is the problem.

I will give you a follow up ASAP.

I hope all is well with all of you.

SBA will always have a soft spot in my heart.

Ride safe !!

Some Bandits have had the magnets come unglued in the starter motor if you have no luck with the battery .
( type starter motor in the search box for more information about it )

It's interesting that both times in 2 1/2 years you have measured the voltage at 12.7 and it wont start. A fully charged battery should read around 13.8v. You may be looking at the battery but it could very well not be getting enough charge each time you ride it.

Thanks guys,

I ordered a new battery on Amazon it should be here Thursday.

I haven't push started a bike in MANY years.
And my friends are all my age and I wouldn't ask them to help me either.
(This "getting old" ain't for sissy's...)

I may have to start "down-sizing" on my choice of bikes too !!
Is there a Bandit 250 ??

I'm charter fishing almost everyday, till June so there's no hurry.

I just HOPE it is just the Battery !!??

I just panicked and came running to you guys.
Like a "security blanket"...

Thanks for being there (here).
