Appendectomy - Recovery time
On Wednesday my wife rushed me through to emergency at 8pm after I had a bad gut ache since lunch time that day. I initially thought it may have been something I ate or maybe I was a bit backed up. I got admitted straight away and the appendix ripped out lunchtime Thursday. I can't stand hospotals for long and I hate needles, so I managed to get out of there 9am Friday as I wasn't using any pain meds. Weird thing is that I packed on over 3Kgs from my normal 85Kgs. I've felt pretty bloated and only today is my weight starting to normalise and I am feeling a little less bloated. For those that have had your appendix ripped out, how long was the recovery process? I can't pick up anything heavy and my 4 year old son just wants to play with Dad at home. My lovely wife has been loking after me and telling me off for moving about too much. I'm getting sick of the commonwealth games coverage and there's no motorsport on this weekend
I might head out the shed and see if there is something to do which doesn't include lifting anything. One of my saws needs a clean and sharpen

Think I was about 16 or 17 when I had mine out. Don't remember much about the recovery. Sorry. Think I was a little tender for a short while.
Rest up Reddog. Won't be long.

Re: Appendectomy - Recovery time
I had mine out after a long time with peritonitis ( perforated appendix ) ............Quack doctor said it was wind . I was only 8 or 9 at the time , so medical procedures have improved somewhat since then . Just do what the Doc. says , & you will be fine ' & fighting fit before you know it .

My South African doctor said You'll be right boy, you can go home didn't even prescribe any antibiotics, my wife hunted him down before I got out of there. Getting around ok ATM, the staples come out Monday week. This would have been better if I was a kid. At 36 it's slowing me up a bit, but got that chainsaw cleaned up at least.

My older teenage daughter had hers out in an emergency at the start of the Sep school holidays a few years ago. She recovered in time for school to start so it was only 2 weeks or so. Good luck mate.

Re: Appendectomy - Recovery time
Gday Reddog, Sorry to hear your in for a service at the moment. The brother in law had his appendix out 3 weeks ago and said he was good to go after a fortnight. in fact after 2 weeks he was back playing state league basketball, he did however say he was sore afterwards. He had keyhole surgery that left him with 3 puncture wounds. Was yours the same or the old fashioned way like when I had mine out?

I have to hold my side for any laughing, coughing or sneezing. You forget how much you use your abdominal muscles. If I get caught off guard with a joke it bloody hurts

I remember laughing hurt. When I was in hospital a mate came to visit and I said please don't make me laugh to which he replied, " Why was the sand wet? Because the seaweed." It was 30 years ago and Ive never forgotten it, I had the giggles so bad. Sorry.

Haha.. Thats like my 4yr old son Joshuas joke.
Why did the Mushroom go to the party?
He was a Fungi
This and broken ribs are very similar. Except broken ribs sleeping is probably a bit more painful as you can only lay on the side without the break

Just in case Bosco got it wrong, I forced myself to look up Wikipedia regarding ice cream brands.
Of the 100 brands, I felt two stood out but may also be incorrect.
Reddog Golden Gaytime and Reddog Lick Me I'm Delicious
Personally, I think Reddog Whippy is more likely.

Re: Appendectomy - Recovery time
I almost feel like I`m missing out on something.
I didn`t think it was that common a thing, but going by the response from everyone, its bound to happen sooner or later.
Rest up mate.
Oh...by the way, why no beer? your not on anti`s, and....and, I`ve got no other reason why you can`t have a special dream induced by alcohol?

Here's some useless information. Peters was originally known as "Peters' Arctic Delicacy Co" until about 1930.

My old man used to work for Peters in Brisbane back in the 60's. I remember for each of us kids for our birthday he would bring home an ice-cream cake packed in dry ice, them were the days.

I can remember eating cheese off the conveyor belt at the Peters factory when we went there on a school excursion.
@MtBeerwah consider yourself lucky mate. One of the lads on ASB mentioned his burst and he then got blood poisoning. It isn't an overly nice experience. It's the first time under the knife in my 36 years not counting wisdom teeth removal.
So far things are going much better. The pain is subsiding, I just have to remember not to overdo it.

Re: Appendectomy - Recovery time
Are you sure you haven't got the not too uncommon "Extended Recovery Time Syndrome" or ERTS
Usually characterised by outbursts of "Ooo, it erts! It erts!"
Treatment includes rest and moderate doses of amber pain killing fluid.
Recovery has been known to take up to six weeks.

Re: Appendectomy - Recovery time
We've gone from some poor bugger recovering from an operation, to a snotty nose, grubby fingered little school kid pinching cheese off a conveyer belt. You just gotta love this place.
