Route 66 Planning
After any hints and pointers (apart from "drive on the wrong side of the road ) from anyone who has driven the US route 66. Especially if you have gone from Chicago to LA (reverse to most trips).
We have a wedding to attent next June in Jamacia of all places and we'll be tying that into a trip to visit Melody's family in IL & MI then head back to LAX to fly home about 3 weeks later.
So who's done it and where did you stay and what did you see/visit along the way? We have a hand full of places we want to see but I'm interested in the quirky little towns etc.
This is harder to plan than I thought.

Ive heard that it is very important to get your kicks.
Seriously though, it's a trip that's on my bucket list.

Dr Google was pretty helpful. Here's one that came up but there were others (search on Route 66 places of interest):

Also, might be worth getting the Billy Connolly book/DVD:

Yeah Dave there are plenty of books available. I guess we're after first hand info and realistic travel distances/times.
The distance end to end isnt the problem its the stopping and short detours that will take the time. If anyone has travelled to the US before you'll know how they love security queues and scanning.
We'll be building a list of must see places such as Monument Valley, The Grand Canyon & Hoover Dam but they're all in the last third of the trip.
