ANZAC Day 2014
Mrs Chook and I started the day off with a 5:45 am Dawn Service at the West Torrens War Memorial Gardens, Hilton. This was our 1st time at our "local" Dawn Service, usually we drive a few suburbs further and attend the Edwardstown Service with other family.
With a 5:45 start it was over by 6:30, some other services were still just starting or waiting to start then The bag pipes sounded awesome in the relatively quiet morning as they marched down Brooker Terrace towards the ceremony just before 5:45
For me the rest of the day will be taken up by a trip into the redeveloped Adelaide Oval to see my #1 sports team, North Adelaide take on Norwood in the traditional ANZAC day SANFL Grand Final replay this afternoon while keeping a eye on the online scoreboard to see how my #2 footy side, Essendon is going against Collingwood in their ANZAC clash at the MCG
Lest We Forget

Re: ANZAC Day 2014
I reckon there are more people attending the dawn services each year. Our little community is only a couple hundred, and I'd say half were there this morning.
Mind you the gold-coin-donation Gun Fire Breakfast might have something to do with getting people motivated as well.

Unfortunately we had an electrical storm park itself on top of us this morning, actually stretches from Norah Head up to Forster.
Has put a dampener on local services.
2 black-outs so far, thank you UPS.

I have greatest respect to those who have served & are serving in our forces & to the sacrifices they make and have made.
Still it is with sorrow that there are those among us who haven't learned the lessons of war and the atrocities it brings and still wish to reign terror on other humans in our world .
Lest We Forget .

Re: ANZAC Day 2014
They went with songs to the battle, they were young.
Straight of limb, true of eye, steady and aglow.
They were staunch to the end against odds uncounted,
They fell with their faces to the foe.
They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning,
We will remember them.
They mingle not with their laughing comrades again;
They sit no more at familiar tables of home;
They have no lot in our labour of the day-time;
They sleep beyond England's foam.
Lest we forget

My number 1 sporting love is the North Adelaide Football Club in the SANFL, I was born a Roosters supporter (Dad would have shoved me back at birth otherwise ) Since the inception of the AFL in the early 90's we haven't made any where near as many banners as we used to but we still do for finals and some special occasions.
Easter Monday we got together to build one for our ANZAC day clash, the old fashioned way, 6.5m x 17m of all crepe and sticky tape, including the hand drawn and cut Rising Sun, here is the result, our tribute to the ANZACs

I have a cousin who played for North in the 60s ( Gary Ryan ) & he told the story at his mum's funeral ( my aunt ) of how at one match she attended , she thought one of the larger opposition players ( Gary was only short ) was being a bit too aggressive with her boy .
So she jumped the fence during the match & gave the other player what for ( she was shorter than Gary ) ...................................needless to say she was then banned from attending to watch him play ................the shit he must have copped in the change rooms later after the match would have been worth seeing LOL

He must have been a pretty good player Paul, back then the SANFL clubs were competitive with VFL sides, (North actually beat VFL Premiers Carlton in 1972 to become Club Champions of Australia). I looked up some records, he played for the Roosters from 1964-1968 so he would have played with the Great Don Lindner and arguably the Best player SA has ever produced, Barrie Robran in his 1st couple of years at North

I can remember he was a fairly prominent player at the time .

Re: ANZAC Day 2014
ANZAC Day morning was brilliant. I caught up with some old mates. Some I hadn't seen for nearly a decade and they still wear the uniform, others I only see once a year when we gather to march, some I see every week. On ANZAC Day we stood together, we marched together, but most importantly on ANZAC Day we remember those who went before us.
I never saw 'action' in my 13 years in the RAAF. I don't march for me. I march to honour those servicemen and women who died in the service of our country. I march to honour the servicemen and women who came back home physically and mentally injured. I march to honour those that serve our country today.
Lest We Forget.

Re: ANZAC Day 2014
This was our effort for 2015, 15 of us spent between 5 and 7 1/2 hours each building this Friday, Dancing Pillion cut out the Aussie Digger and the Kiwi soldier from crepe (the whole banner is crepe and tape) here's a time delay of it being built and some video of it going up

A fitting tribute Chook...............after all that work , were you tempted to make the players run around & not through it ?

I attended the dawn service here in Tsv for my first time and it will now be a habit. I cannot recall the name of the officer who spoke but the speech he gave was possibly the best ANZAC speech I have ever heard. It just came across to me as being very personal and it touched me for that.
