Green slip variance
In NSW a compulsory third party insurance scheme is mandatory for all registered vehicles.
Known as the Green slip, the insurance covers injury to others if the particular vehicle is involved in a crash.
I bought the "Not Bandit", registered and thus with a valid Green Slip issued by NRMA.
When registration is due for renewal, it is common practice that the company issuing the insurance policy will send a renewal in the post.
Now, in our modern age of data mining, I shouldn't have been surprised that somehow GIO got wind of the fact that I now owned "Jewel" and sent me a policy renewal for the Green Slip. Their quote was for $629. Rather steep, I thought.
A week later NRMA sent me a policy renewal. Being the current insurer, I was at least expecting this one. $537. Better, but still pricey.
I went to get a Pink Slip for the bike, compulsory safety inspection certificate, and asked if they also quote Green Slips whilst I was there. The dealer was an agent for GIO. I almost told them not to bother, as I had a GIO quote at home. A few questions later, I had a new quote from GIO and blow me down $428, I couldn't get my wallet out quick enough
How can a company get away with sending a "Fishing" quote through the mail that is $200 more than their actual policy premium?
It pays to shop around.

Without insurance. I only run third party damage.

Hey Bosco, I generally do the Greenslip Comparison every time I have a rego come up. I've found that GIO is always the cheapest for me.

Exactly which makes a lot of sense, since all the mental sports bikes are 1000cc.
The VStrom was only slightly more for 12months than the Bandit 1200 was for 6 months!

Exactly right Peter, Gixxers and R1's are half the price of a Bandit. We've been saying it for years the they need to change the criteria. Its not that difficult surely. They do power to weight with learners bikes.

Remember CTP is for THIRD party claims (yes the at fault rider/driver is covered for up to $5000).
According to one person (former manager of NSW Motorcycle Alliance - Rob Colligan) the reason for the higher capacity bikes being more expensive is that this is where most cruisers and tourers are and it's pillions making claims.

Don't you just hate it when someone throws in a bit of logic to ruin a good conspiracy theory....

It does mean though that my next bike will most likely be between 750cc and 1000cc

Re: Green slip variance
Not sure about the green slip thing, but I have full comprehensive with swan insurance and it is under $300 a year on my gsf1250 07. I have used Swan on all my past bike too, been very happy with them.
Re: Green slip variance
the NSW Green slip is the compulsory 3rd party injury insurance we pay as part of our registration renewal in SA, we get no choice but it is government controlled and outsourced to a private insurer, NSW get to chose a insurer but still pay a bucket load more than we do.Cal wrote:Not sure about the green slip thing, but I have full comprehensive with swan insurance and it is under $300 a year on my gsf1250 07. Our CTP Insurance (Metro) for the Bandit is:
$67.94 + $6.06 GST ($74) for 3 months or
$262.58 + $23.42 GST ($286) for 12 months
This would be cheaper in other regions
Total Rego/insurance/Emerency Services Levy:
$414 a year for Metro, cheaper in other regions
Re: Green slip variance
You see in the eye's of the insurance company if you own a bike over 1150cc your a baby killer. but what i don't under stand is the following
a: bike collides with car
b: bike collides with truck
c: bike collides with road side sign
d: bike crashes for no apparent reason
all of the above the rider whom the greenslip doesnt really cover is the only one injured or if you are carrying a pillion
so my theory is if i crash in to a car i plan to crash through the windscreen and head butt the driver so i get my moneys worth, sounds like a plan

Re: Green slip variance
What do you mean it doesn't cover the rider?????
It bloody well should. Vic TAC insurance (part of our rego) covers all road users.
This green slip system sucks

You're telling us!
It even has a MCIS (motorcycle insurance scheme) levy that covers, purportedly, little kids that are injured by uninsured vehicles.
So I'm paying to insure against someone who doesn't pay! Go figure that one out.
NSW used to be govt run scheme, like SA, but as usual we were sold the green slip system wirh the bullshit line that competition among insurance companies would make it cheeper.
If you ever hear that line, duck for cover.

Re: Green slip variance
I received a news letter today from skillmaster motorcycle service's and theres an interesting piece in there regarding NSW green slips, from what I understand they are available to all NSW riders but are not listed on the MAA quote page, you must contact insurer direct,
Heres the web site http://monaland.com.au/index.html
Hope this helps save us all some money

Until recently the at fault or no fault rider or driver was not covered.madmax wrote:What do you mean it doesn't cover the rider?????

It actually made sense, the insurance is 3rd part personal injury, so you are insuring against injuring a 3rd party.
Ironically when the legislation changed in SA so the ride/driver is also covered, the cost went down at the same time, I'm still trying to figure how that worked but I'll take the decrease anyway
