Drake Weekend
My trip was probably not quite as exciting as some others as it was quite short, about 600Kms each way.
The southbound trip was Hervey Bay, Sunshine Coast (smoko & the start of the toll way), Brisbane, Logan, Mt Tambourine (lunch), Beaudesert, Woodenbong, Urbenville, Bonalbo, Drake.
Maybe I have lived away from the ‘big smoke’ for too many years but I consider travelling in six lane traffic on the motorway shear madness. I will seriously consider alternative routes should I travel this way again on a motorbike.
At one stage on the motorway I was travelling about six car lengths behind a ute. The base of a bollard (~300mm octagonal rubber thing about 5Kg) bounced out the back of the ute directly in front of me. As I was on a collision course I moved to the left very quickly. The bollard base bounced for a third time and headed to the right. This was as unpredictable as any kangaroo I have encountered and even more scary.
I stopped for fuel at Woodenbong and I could be mistaken but I reckon I heard banjo music. I think it could be a good location for a movie.
Finally arrived at Drake and had a great evening with a bunch of like minded guys (and gal). Thanks Hammy for the organisation – well done.
There was no way I was going to return home via the motorway even though Google maps indicated it was almost one hour longer on the inland route.
My route was Drake, Tenterfield, Toowoomba, Nanango, Goomeri and Kilkivan to Hervey Bay and was mainly long sweeping highway once beyond Tenterfield. The ability to travel “just a little bit quicker” had me arrive home in slightly less time than the outward journey.

It was great to met up with you too Dave.
Sometime the less obvious route is the better route, hence I didn't travel out through Melbourne on the freeways either.

Is that because you was stuck on the side of the road with your killswitch in the "ON" position ?madmax wrote:

Geez, thanks Dave. You think you had a short weekend ride at 600 odd km each way! My ride was like a trip to the corner store compared to yours! I only clocked up 638kms all together.
