Re: filtering
The bigger problem is how drivers react to riders doing it. Darwin drivers seem to hate it. We don't have the same gridlock issues of the rest of you poor bastards but for those few minutes each day where traffic slows, I've seen drivers actively block riders from moving through. We're one of the few countries around the world that make it illegal. Australia needs to do some collective "growing up" and recognise the benefits. I thought there was a filtering trial going on in parts of Sydney to help localised congestion there. Is that still happening? I'm holding out hope that might help the lawmakers see the common sense in it.

Queue jumping
I dont lane filter - to me it is like Queue jumping (check spelling), gridlock or not.
I just make my self rresponsible for my own safety, be aware of my surroundings and have a plan B ready.

Its not queue jumping if your filtering doesn't slow down cars that you pass...

Re: filtering
You know that, I know that, and most bike riders do as well, but the sad thing is the mindset of a lot of the omni-tintop-licence holders is that we're getting an advantage whilst they are still stuck in traffic, not aware we have actually improved their situation with less congestion in front of them slowing things down.
With uniform road laws being the norm, hopefully this will be adopted across Aust. Once one state has done the hard yards of testing and trialing the others should follow suit.
Unfortunately for me it doesn't help, I'm too wide and if there was space big enough a car would be in it anyway

Re: filtering
I can understand why some car drivers hate it. I remember having my left mirror smashed off by a motorcycle cop in Perth many years ago. Thing is when your stuck in traffic and he doesn't stop you can't exactly get out and run after him.
Then there's the HD crowd that come thundering down between cars scaring the crap out of them. I'm sure they do it deliberately
Then of course there is the jealous crowd. Just the fact you got in front of them is enough to set them off. I had one dickhead decide it was a good idea that after abusing me he would then try and chase me through peak hour traffic. Needless to say it was a futile chase.
Generally speaking I think most drivers don't care, as long as you don't interfere or hit them.
As a motorcyclist I have no problem with filtering, but I have my own set of rules
1. If I don't think I'll fit, I wont try.
2. If the traffic is moving, even slightly, I'm staying put. If car is moving it can change lanes and we all know they can't see us.
3. Its got to be worth it. If there is only one car in front of me at the traffic lights and I'm in no hurry I wont bother.
4. And of course if someone "important" is watching then then I stay where I am.

Re: filtering
The problem with making it legal is that there is a large demographic of riders who are nowhere near competent enough riders to do it safely. I think for a lot of riders, sitting in the traffic is a much better option.
Also, the "six times safer" slogan makes no sense. Six times safer than what?

Presumably six times safer than you would be normally...............not sure how they work it out though.Sloth_27 wrote:The problem with making it legal is that there is a large demographic of riders who are nowhere near competent enough riders to do it safely. Anyone not confident or capable enough shouldn't attempt it I suppose & most people won't put themselves at risk ...............same as a lot of other potentially hazardous activities

Good Point and one that I have pondered too. Always makes me shake me head, how they have a stat for everything.Sloth_27 wrote:The problem with making it legal is that there is a large demographic of riders who are nowhere near competent enough riders to do it safely. The NRL Grand Final recently had a stat for Anthony M, the Roosters captain and fullback, he was/is the first captain and fullbak to win a grandfinal in 73 years.
Stats Hmmp - I don't rate them.

Re: filtering
A good advert but it'll fail as it uses logic to explain the situation. The typical tin top is not a logical beast. At least not around Canberra. That said, I rarely split or filter. If there is space and time at the lights, then I'll do it but most of the time I'll just give myself lots of space and angle my front wheel to the left or right just in case I get rear ended.....again

6 out of 10 people would probably agree with you thoughbarry_mcki wrote:Yep - 85% of people think that stats are made up.
BTW, I just made that up....
