Never buy a cheap Helmet
Well thats what I was always told..
Was over on a kiwi biker forum and saw
this guys helmet after he made contact with a logging truck.
Apart from cuts and bruises and a slight headache there was no permanent damage.
Think I'm off to buy an LS2 for around $130...

They all have to pass safety standards but some are quieter /have removable liners etc or the graphics can cost a premium .
I dont have an issue with cheaper helmets (although have spent around $300 on the last few ) I doubt they would pass standards if they were that dangerous .

Re: Never buy a cheap Helmet
I don't know if it's come up on this site before, but these tests seem to indicate that price is not the best guide.

Re: Never buy a cheap Helmet
The fact the rider lived to post about it means the helmet did its job. Probably the most destroyed helmet I've seen so far though.

We should all buy for fit first. "Image" is last on my list. I'm looking for another HJC at the moment actually.

Yep, fit and comfort are my number one criteria when buying a helmet. Price only ever becomes a consideration when 2 helmets are closely matched, and then I buy the cheaper one.

Re: Never buy a cheap Helmet
@2wheels I went from a HJC to a Shark RSR2. The shark was a good fit and it is at least half as light. It also doesn't have problems with turbulence at speeds.
BTW that helmet did a great job if the guy lived.

Although I like and fit HJC they don't make mine any more so I will be trying others (again).
Also prefer HJC as I already have various visors and we know how expensive they are.

Try the Shark Vision R if you get a chance but hang onto the bastard though. They're slippery suckers.

Here is the (dare I say it) be all and end all for motorcycle helmet research, if you take the time to study this website the way I have you too will be armed with an educated and reassuring mind when it comes time to make your next helmet purchase.
http://sharp.direct.gov.uk/
there is other organisation that i've researched that tests helmets the way the UK system does, exceeds snell and Australian Standards which are way outdated.
Unfortunately 50% of the helmets tested are not available in Australia
I do hope they implement this here very soon as well.

Re: Never buy a cheap Helmet
I am in the market for new helmet, I am going for a Shoei 1100 (Ithink is the model type) from helmet ware house for $599, up here they are around $799 from the shop. When you try and get a better deal so you can keep the money local they are not even interested.
Have looked at Arai, HJC etc and Sharks but Sharks are even more expensive than the Shoei up here at least, and other "cheaper" types dont fit as nice (firm) as the Shoei.

2c's
I just got a shoe TR-X. I cant say it is any better than 2 previous HJC's. More expensive too.
BMW sport integrale - very nice too.
From what I have read, anything that is DOT SNELL rated will do. All "brand" helmets are as safe.
Then it is fit, features and looks.
One thing I can add - Shoe have a whisper kit - It stops wind noise from your shoulders up into the helmet.
I think you can get them for other helmets (I am tempted to try it on my HJC)
Tried one today on a ride to uki - makes the helmet very quiet. no earplugs needed.
Got home after 300k round trip, ears in good condition at the end of it - just a bit sweaty on the back of the neck.

Re: Never buy a cheap Helmet
Well that just confirms my suspicions that I have a large odd shaped head.
I have tried the other helmets but they seem to sit too high on my noggin or it is too loose or too small, nothing I have tried is as good as the Shoei for my head leastways. The Shoei size helmet that works best for me is large, will try one more shop next week before I purchase.

I am on my second shoei 1100 it's a great helmet especially with the air ventilation yes there is some noise by I now wear in ear monitors for long rides which greatly reduce the noise levels. Yes price is an issue but I look at the fit first before all else. Last time I needed a new lid I spent 1hr and half in MCAS trying on every make and model they had and the brought the Shoei from last years graphic designs at $200 discount

Cheap helmets
Isnt it amazing how some pretty patterns on a helmet can boost the price?
I was checking out helmets in PS in Adelaide last summer, and the one i picked up was over $1000 (shoei), beautiful helmet, but told it was for sports bike riders... upright riders get a different model, wind deflection blah blah.. so my TZ-X still cost me $600, but has colors to suit both my blue bikes. Bargain..and yes guys, its a fashion statement lol

Re: Never buy a cheap Helmet
does your helmet produce wind noise when you open the top vent?
Mine does - I have to tilt my head forward a little to stop it.
been thinkin of applying something around where it joins the shell to see if I can reduce it.

I'm not so sure it's complete crap. Years ago I had an AGV Xvent, brilliant helmet on the 600 I had. But when I wore it on the Bandit the bloody thing would try to pull my head off.
