Fluoro & Full Leathers
First topic message reminder :
I read in yesterdays paper, that a local Highway patrol cop wants us in full leathers all time when we are on the bike, and also fluoro jackets. He says that it will be law in 18 months. And I'm guessing it'll start a state to state thing. I just hope that when it happens, every biker will join up and ride against it because if we don't, we'll be stuck with it.

These kind of rumors come up from time to time. I think there must be people sitting in offices with nothing better to do. Makes for good Pub talk though.

Re: Fluoro & Full Leathers
Ahh the old 'Hi Vis/ leather gear will save your life' argument!
That's on the cards over here at the moment with various lobby groups pushing the pro's and the con groups bagging those ideas each with their own agenda.
I do agree that the right gear will reduce the harm when, not if you come off (or are taken off). It may not stop you from being killed but it sure will provide a little protection. Over here the only legal requirement for a rider is they must wear a helmet unless they have a medical exemption. When ever I've been heading towards the ground (road or dirt) the first thing to hit the deck is my hand then shoulder etc. My personal view is that some form of protective clothing should be a legal requirement, gloves at the very least.
My personal perspective is that I'm not convinced Hi Vis is the answer. Hi Vis has never prevented other road users from being dick heads. So why do I still wear it? My thoughts are that if I didn't then probably more road users would make me a target, and I also believe that riders should use everything at their disposal to make their ride safer. Yeah the tractor riders in their clubs would never wear them but Darwin will educate them eventually. Should Hi Vis be made a legal requirement, IMHO, No but it should be encouraged. Perhaps even a rebate off your insurance as an incentive.
I also believe there are other items that make daylight and night time riding safer, like day light running lights, flashing brake lights, HID lights etc The most important one for me is that the bigger issue is around all road users and their awareness or understanding of other vehicle type when on the road.

Re: Fluoro & Full Leathers
A friend of mine who was a specialist crash investigator said hi-vis was also really useful after a rider had gone down in terms of vehicles avoiding them if the crashed rider was lying in the roadway.

Re: Fluoro & Full Leathers
"RoadSafe North East member George Talbot said motorcyclists make up about two per cent of registrations, but account for about 15 per cent of fatalities on the roads."
Jeez if thats true of Victoria, you poor buggers have big problems.
In the NT, motorcyclists make up just under 4% of registrations and account for just under 10% of fatalities. These include off-road (non registerable) dirt bikes and quad bikes on areas considered public space - like beaches etc. The NT has one of the highest per capita road death fatality rates of a good part of the developed Western world - yes this place kills people.
A big chunk are comprised of pedestrians (who tend to sleep on highways after a drink or 12) and single vehicle roll overs in remote areas.
Mr Talbot should be careful. Someone might ask him to substantiate his figures. This is the sort of mis-information that riders Aust wide are up against from ill informed RS bureaucrats. Trouble is, it gets the ear of politicians and media. Evidence based change is the name of the game - not guess work.

Re: Fluoro & Full Leathers
These cockheads are at it again. Another big write up in Fridays paper about making it law in 2013. Don't these morons realise that it will be too hard to police? Can you image how many cops will have to be posted at the borders to stop interstate bikers from coming into Victoria without full leathers and fluoro jackets? How about the lone highway patrol cop stopping half a dozen Bandito's to book them for not wearing fluoros and full leathers? I'm beginning now to understand what T A C stands for Tools About Cars.

I think you'll find it will be state wide
You can tell by these 2 statements this clown is anti-motorcyclists
“If you don’t like this, stop riding motorcycles,”
“The biggest thing about motorcycle riders that I’ve seen in 37 years is that they always find someone to blame,” he said

Re: Fluoro & Full Leathers
What is it about Victoria?
The great unwashed (non motorcycling bureaucrats) get a f'n bee in their bonnet, decide it will be a great thing and then force it through with bugger all evidence that there was a problem in the first place or that it will actually work! Then they try and coerce other states and Territories to follow suit to try and justify their own poorly considered approach. Previous examples include front number plates on bikes - failed. ESC on all passenger vehicles - failed (although mandated in Vic but lots of exemptions issued...), and now high viz. Good grief.
You Victorian riders need to ask for evidence... EVIDENCE... that this is going to help car drivers see you. Then ask, how much high viz will be enough - and exactly how will it be policed? Is a patch on each shoulder enough? Does it need to be a vest complying with AS/NZS Standard ***** etc. What happens in summer with the additional heat fatigue from wearing a vest over the jacket etc etc. Will the same be mandated for bicycle riders and pedestrians? If not, why not? It's gotta be choice, else it just creates more petty criminals of us all.
Phuck! I'm off to have another whiskey.

Got an email from the Parliamentry Secretary of Transport today saying that while there is encouragement to wear Hi Vis, there a no plans to make it compulsary. I would post the email only I can't get it onto the forum.

Fluro/full leather
Stuff that! I ride in the heat and there is no way i will wear anything that has no air flow, nor would i wear them in winter months, cause there would be very little room to layer clothing.
As for fluro.... why cant some manufacturers put fluro strips instead of the usual 3M piping? it would still be visible and even pretty lol
