Rear Shock Question
Brains Trust ? I would like to replace my '06 OEM rear shock for something a bit better. I have sourced out an '08 GSXR1000, and an '07 GSXR1300 Hyabusa shock. Both in top condition, and either one for $100 plus shippping. Plus 30 day money back guarantee. My 12 has plenty of room once you remove the box that is there for an ABS unit. So the resevoir on top of these two shocks is not a problem. Any toughts or ideas would be greatly appreciated. I am leaning toward the Busa shock as it may be the firmer. ??

Re: Rear Shock Question
Plenty of adjustment on the gsxr1000 unit, damping and compression have 24 (or 32?)notches and the preload is by thread, not 7 stages like the bandit shock. Setting it initially at midpoint for damping and compression was way too stiff. I read that 8mm of thread should be exposed for an 80kg rider on the gixxer, and I have it now at 13mm exposed and I'm 105kg. Probably another 30mm to go.

Re: Rear Shock Question
Which one ? GSXR1000 or GSXR1300 ?? Both will probably give the intended improvement that I am looking for But who knows which is the better unit ? Anyone got a coin ?

Re: Rear Shock Question
So how do you know how many kls on the shock .My aprilia shock (sachs ) looks new .It has 70,000 kls on it and was pretty bad .I have just had it
serviced $210 .Thats twice as much as your shock costs ..I 'd be thinking any shock used will need to be serviced or you will never know if it could be better .Thats going to add up to about $350 (there is always something) if the shock IS good .Still cheap ? Yes ,i think so, but does make you think .
Then there is the matter of ride height .You may need new dog bones to get it right .Add another $70 = $420
I'm a downer tonight sorry .

Re: Rear Shock Question
The GSXR says " Low Miles " in perfect condition. The Busa Says 5K miles, excellent cond' "looks like new". ?? Have already factored in the new dogbones. Still a fare way cheaper than a new Wilber. We wont even say the "O" word.

Re: Rear Shock Question
Must be good then ,they wouldnt lie would they .
Sorry, i'll shut up .Personally i'd buy a new Hagon shock that fits, works, is new, and costs not much more .Actually, i did, on my 1200 .
Come to think of it, it replaced the gsxr shock i fitted that was crap and a wast of money .Can only call it as it was .Maybe just mine, as other seem to be happy .

Re: Rear Shock Question
Just removed plastic box/tray/ABS thinggy that sits behind rear shock. Removal needed to make room for GSXR shock comp' reserviour. But ! and theres always a but. It opens everything up to the rear tyre. So it looks like a Rear Hugger will have to go on the list. Aw well.

Re: Rear Shock Question
terry hays at shock treatment reckons the rear standard one is OK - works better with a different valve in it though [it can be pulled to bits and rebuilt]
Re: Rear Shock Question
i`ve currently got one in mine, gold valved, respringed and reshimed, makes alot of difference, briliant really ,but am getting ride of it to put in a Wilbers full remote preload and compression control unit

Re: Rear Shock Question
Well the GSXR shock arrived, only 7 days from USA, And because it is pouring down rain and forecast for more. I thought I might as well make a start. Here is the two shocks to compare.
The GSXR is about 5mm shorter so I have 25mm stainless steel lift dogbones coming, that shoul bring it back to about normal. Plus a Red Fox hugger to tidy up and keep the shock from being splattered.

Re: Rear Shock Question
Le tme know what you think... I was spewing it didn't fit the ABS model.
Make sure you regrease the linkage bearings. God knows why they don't put small grease nipples on them.

Re: Rear Shock Question
Even though the GSXR is about 10mm wider in the spring area, the dogbons will fit and clear OK without spacers, as stated in some other forums. My plan is to fit the rear shock. Take the forks off and take them to the suspension specialist, along with the new RT springs and gold valves. Put her back together then take her back to the "dudes" to set her up prperly with me. Well thats the plan anyway.

Re: Rear Shock Question
Sounds like a good plan/ you can set it up yourself with Jan taking the measurements as well , but peace of mind if the experts do it is good

Re: Rear Shock Question
General comment, my bike can with a Hyabusa shock. I didnt know that untill I went to see where the adjuster had gone. LOL
Guess the dealer didnt know. Bike rides very well.
Will be interesting to see the GSXR one works out.

Re: Rear Shock Question
Recieved the new dogbones today. For starters I thought that they were just the same as the standard ones. A very small difference which gives back the 25mm lost with the GSXR shock. Front forks are booked in for thursday morning. Should be all back together in time for the weekend RAIN that is forecast.
