acceleration ? Empty acceleration ?

Post  moto1 Sat 18 Feb 2012, 8:32 am

I was just reading a review article on the Kawasaki Z1000 ABS
the tester says the bike can hit 100km in first gear
I can't recall getting there with the bandit I tend to change to second sooner
has anyone done it in 1st gear ?

Most Bandits are geared pretty low as standard. Low down grunt is what they are known for and one of the major factors in my purchase, after owning a Blackbird that would shoot past 100 in first, in the blink of an eye. I'm older now. Maybe not wiser. I just grin when I see the young guns take off from the lights, trying to red line it in the first few gears. Why ? To get back to your question. Probably, nearly all new model bikes from 600cc upwards will easily achieve that feat ( with the right gearing ). I'm happy with the grunt factor. Very Happy

Mine is the same year as your one Hammy. When I picked it up a few w/end's ago, (double demerrits w/e) I noticed it was only revving at 3600rpm at 100ks. I checked out what it would be doing in 2nd at 100ks, I think from memory, it was about 6500rpm, so I'm pretty sure you'd be able to pull 100 in 1st.

It might be a bit academic but you'd need to be showing 105 on the speedo or maybe even 107 to be really doing 100.

I find my self short shifting first to second a bit, As all first wants to do is wheelie Twisted Evil Not that is a bad thing. It's just that there is so much Torque on tape, It just drives hard any where in the RPM.

I found that my trap speeds at the drags were wildly different to what my bike was indicating. I know this 'cause I was tucked in under the screen helmet on the tank wishing to go faster and the clocks were right in my face.
I think that the speedo error on the Bandit is not linear. @ 100km/h actual the indicated is approx 105-107km/h. @ 190km/h, indicated speed is 220km/h approx. I doubt very much that the equipment at Willowbank raceway is wrong.

According to the gearing commander website if your banging off the limiter in 1st with stock gearing you'd be doing 99.8kmh so you might see 100 on the speedo.

I did it a few times in moments of red mist and can't recall seeing 100 on the speedo. I do remember seeing 90 tho

I've seen 110 on the speedo in first, that was before I put the scorpion pipe on. I haven't bothered to try since.

as the speedo on the bandit is always out.. that will affect the travelled mileage but quite a bit..eg..shows more K's than the bike has really done!!

can the speedo be sorted..will a dealer be able to do it ...is the speedo taken from the speed sensor on the primary sprocket..and if so will putting a smaller sprocket on again affect the speedo....
