Alternative Bead Breaker
I had bought a pair of Pirelli tyres some time ago. The old front tyre had just about turned itself into a slick so it was time to wrestle with rubber.
I don't have a bead breaker so had to come up with an alternative. Looking at various tools around the shed and a large builder's clamp caught my eye. "I wonder".
Laid the wheel on the bench and supported the rim with a couple of bits of wood, to keep the brake disc off the bench.
One part of the clamp under the benchtop the other over the tyre close to the rim.
Simply crank the handle and it forced the tyre away from the rim. Job half done. Turn the wheel over and do the same with the other side.
Worked a treat.

Good thinking, but what do you actually save by doing it yourself?

The fee to have it done was $25 per wheel. Enquired at three different shops and all had the same rate. I had bought the tyres from an overseas supplier so there was always going to be a charge to have them fitted.

What if you bought the tyres locally and had them fitted at the same time?
are you going to balance them as well?

Depending on the tyre and the seller anything up to twice the price of getting them from OS and fitting them yourselfmadmax wrote:What if you bought the tyres locally and had them fitted at the same time?

Correct mate. No offence intended or taken
Re: Alternative Bead Breaker
No worries guys. All okay. A week off at present so time to for a ride or two and scrub the new rubber in.
