First topic message reminder :

Copped a speeding ticket today, suppose I have been lucky so far, but is it legal for coppers to hide way up out of site in the forest with radar gun and binoculars then radio down the road and describing the rider and pulling them over, it does not seem right to me , normally you can see the pricks but this is like hunting us, what do you all think,, ?? PS this was up the black spur out of healesville

Now chaps I want to quickly put an end to any of this RIDICULOUS contention that it's about money. How can you honestly think that when the state of Victoria only raised a little over a paltry, trifling, barely significant (well, loose change really) half a billion $$ last year. I simply won't hear of it!!!!

If it's anything like WA they hang out where all the try hard bikers fall off. Like in the Perth hills for instance.

If people can't ride they shouldn't try roads which require an alert, decent rider

If the government and police were really serious about reducing the road toll and increasing safety, they only need to do 3 things.

1. Increase the number of VISABLE police on the roads.
2. Improve the condition of the roads
3. Improve the education and training for ALL road users.

Concentrating on the bullshit that is "Speed Kills" is nothing more than a thinly vailed attempt at brainwashing the public to make it easier for Mr and Mrs Average road user to accept having their wallets raped.

It must also remembered that on average only 1500 people die on the roads each year. Realistically, while tragic for the family and friends, it's an insignificant nothing figure.

Agreed, BUT, I see nothing wrong with speeding fines..... as long as the profits are directly spent on either purchasing new equipment for catching people OR on improving roads, increasing training, improving licensing issues, etc....

I can't believe that a P plater can get an a 6cyld toyota landcruiser, attach a 2 tonne caravan on the back and drive whereever they want without any extra training? Or that a young person can own a 4wd full stop without understanding how it differs from a standard hatch or sedan? Or that people over the age of 67 (retirement age) don't have to regularly complete a test to maintain their license? Or that........ so many gripes....

I also can't understand WHY we still allow people to drive with .05 BAC.... It should be 0, full stop. You drink, you DON"T drive. Then all the excuses of I'm just over, I only had one and hour go away. Alcohol and exhaustion kill allot more people than speed.... and allot of people speed because they are drunk or exhausted...

Mate it's not just P platers driving 4WD's with caravans, boat trailers, horse floats.

What if the only thing the young person has driven is a 4WD, would you then expect them to get extra training to drive a small hatch or sedan.

I don't have a particular problem with speeding fines as such. But I wish the government, police and sheeple would stop trying to tell me they are in the name of safety. Fuck off. Safety has nothing to do with it, it's all about revenue. How the fuck is doing 5km over the sign posted speed limit on a straight stretch of road on a clear day going to kill me?

As for 0.00 alcohol level, lets be a little bit sensible about it. What you're proposing will mean when you visit Grandma or your favourite old Aunt and you have some of her trifle you won't be able to drive home.

So just because someone reaches an arbitory age they need retesting? What a crock of shit. When my dad was 65 he was very ill and shouldn't have been driving, he was hopeless. We tried to stop him, but he kept driving. So, we decided to get a driving instructor to 'test' him, thinking that he might listen to a professional. Well that backed fired, because the old man passed the test with flying colours. If it had been a real test he would have lost 2 points, both for driving one handed.

What needs to happen is that EVERY road user do a refresher course every 5 years. Not the bullshit how to park etc, an actual 'how to DRIVE/RIDE' intermediate or advanced course. If you pass you get a reduction in licence, rego and insurance fees.

As I said the road toll in Australia is insignificant, and I fail to see how any measure currently put in place is anything more than a way of increasing revenue.

It's not just revenue, speeding fines have a place and sometimes they are about safety. Think about someone doing 100 in a 50 or 60 zone. It happens and I'm glad they throw the book at them.
However on a country highway the tolerance should lifted to at least 15. In 40, 50 and 60 zones It should be 8 (3 for camera error and 5 for tolerance) Everywhere else 10
Anything less than this is IMO revenue raising.

As for old people I think they should have a medical test every year after age 65

.

the vast majority of speeding fines are for speeds between 1 to 10 over the sign posted speed limit. This is revenue raising pure and simple.

If someone is doing 100 in a 40,50 or 60 zone, then the threat of a speeding fine obviously isn't enough to make them think twice about it. And even then, it's not a given that they will die or cause someone else to die.

I agree that's why the tolerances needs to be changed. Trouble is the governments are hooked on the revenue they get from them just like they are with gambling revenue. They wont stop either.

Sounds like they got you fair and square. Your whole argument seems to be that, "I used to get away with this, why can't I get away with it now?" No sympathy here.

You knew the speed limit and you knew that you were exceeding it.

There is an old Chinese proverb that goes along the lines of: If you pick up a snake and it bites you, don't complain because you knew it was a snake when you picked it up.

You knew the risk you were taking, so don't complain.

Yes, I know it gives ya the shits. I just got pinged for $440 because I forgot to renew my licence on my birthday 5 days earlier. Yes I was pissed, but only at myself for forgetting about renewing the licence - not at the cop who was doing her job.

I don't have a problem with the cops, just the low speed limits and low tolerances for infractions. But that is not up to the coppers. They are just doing their jobs, as we all do each day.

lets be honest speeding can be an issue and yes we all take the risk of getting caught if we speed.

hiding behind bushes is low down as they keep saying "its not about revenue raising but reducing accidents" if this was the case then why hide???

Speed limits are a bit of a joke in Australia especially on long wide country roads between major cities, speed limits of 130-150kms would be much more acceptable and go a long way to reducing fatigue due to lengthy drive times. But is speed the only issue here? lets face it "L" and "P" platers being able to drive ford and holden V6 and V8's under the guise of power to weight ratio limitations is far worse than speeding, and in NSW restricting new drivers to a total of 11 hrs of professional driving instruction what a crock. And don't even get me started on the ease of which you can get a motorbike license especially here in NSW. I am not saying that there are bad drivers but the point that you can get a licence without any one on one professional instruction is just a total joke. The laws for learner motorbike riders in WA are far better.

Okay Rant over Smile sorry for digressing
