Fuel brand loyalty in question
Well this is going to be a pointless thread.
I swapped brands of fuel. From Bp 98 too caltex 98 with very pleasant results.
No i can not say about better mileage.
No i can say say about better running in certain rev ranges.
But i will say it seems to run smoother with a little more responsiveness .
Dare i say it seems to tick over quieter too.
As i said this is a pointless thread but I am curious if anyone, (im sure there is few people) has had a change of brands in fuel and am curious why they changed too.
PS, I was a bp loyalist for 3 bikes and this test is only on the second tank of Caltex so far.
Cheers Ad

Re: Fuel brand loyalty in question
I've always used Vortex (91,95&98) I ran one tank of BP ultimate in my brothers 650, it ran 20 less than the previous tank full. Mechanics that I've spoken to say to avoid the fancy BP or Shell stuff, as they can foul plugs and some of the additives aren't good for bikes.
That being said, I have ran Shell 91 a few times and the bikes been no worse for wear. Mind you, I only use Shell on long rides when there are no Caltex stations near by.

Re: Fuel brand loyalty in question
i've started getting BP95 or caltext95/98 only. The BP is close to home so easy when I forget to fill up to find the bike empty in the morning. I like the woolies caltex's cause I can pay with the credit card without taking odd any gear...

I agree its a pointless thread.
Everyone has an opinion and no one agrees. That alone means that no one is right and no one is wrong.
There are so many variables its not funny.
I'm happy if you're happy though.

Re: Fuel brand loyalty in question
No loyalty here .But
I dont use BP in Nambour because the attendant told me off when i dropped a pie at the self serve counter .
I'VE GOT TO CLEAN THAT UP . THEN WHY DONT YOU SERVE PEOPLE AT A SURVIVE STATION etc ,etc .
The owner is rude and they dont sell "plain" unleaded for my Datsun car . Everything is over the top expensive , and for some strange reason they
dont like me .
The Caltex across the road has a cute girl who drives a Datsun (Dado girl ) and a motor bike .Wears black leathers which goes well with her
flame red hair .Also worked out a single key with Aprilia on it which i lost probably was mine and saved it for me .
Doesnt sell pies .
On a trip any of them will do ,but shy away from those huge ones .Unfortunately those nice country small ones have all but gone .

Re: Fuel brand loyalty in question
The pointless thread and I are happy to hear from in short with little technical, mind warping comments.
Thank you all for responses so far.
Next pointless or not so pointless comments on this topic from me will be when i am in tour mode.
Noticed an almost sudden change though as it stands today ( 2 tanks at city speeds).
Might try the lower octane rated fuels and see as summer is here thus effecting heat.
Cheers Ad.
ps. what are city speeds? lol

Re: Fuel brand loyalty in question
I'll use anything as long as it is 100% petrol. IMO 98 is pointless in a Bandit. You know that occasional tink tink sound you hear on a ride? That's the $2 in coin falling out of the exhaust when you use that stuff. Same same for 95 unless you bike pings on 91 and if it does look into why. Unless you have a timing advancer or have raised your compression it should run quite okay on 91. I used to use 95/98 but that was mainly to avoid the ethanol. Now that BP and shell have dropped it I'm using 91 and haven't noticed any changes. If anything the B12 cold starts easier on 91.
Also - petrol companies blend their fuels with different additives according to the projected ambient temperatures for the areas in which the fuel will be sold. Something that a BP tech guy told me once. This could explain why we perceive differences in fuels from time to time.
If the help me light comes on for fuel and there is only one fuel stop for miles around - are you going to say no sorry I'd rather push my 200kg bandit to a shell than use Brand X petrol / E10?

Re: Fuel brand loyalty in question
Woolies 95 for me.
Put it in my hyundai shit box cause on 91 it pings it's guts out.
Fill the car, fill up jerrie cans = enough fuel for 2 weeks of bikes and car. No need to pay stupid mark up on payday casue I buy it when it's cheep
Fill bikes from jerries with strainer type funnel to make sure all the wombats are out of the fuel, cause noone wants wombats in a bike petrol tank

I'll use anything that goes bang! when you mix a fine mist with air and pass a spark through it.
I only get 300km to the tank, doesn't seem to vary much, so I fill when the odometer says so.

Re: Fuel brand loyalty in question
I use petrol from fuel pumps.
Mostly from Caltex. Because there is no lining up.

Re: Fuel brand loyalty in question
Im using BP ultimate. Its easier coz its on my way home! Have used BP ultimate (mostly) on my last bike and no issues with fuel pump or filters clogging. I'll continue to "over spend" on octane and see how many kays the fuel pump filter lasts as per Master Gus' findings.
I had used shell optimax for a while when it originally surfaced, but the plugs and valves didnt like it . Never gone back to shell for any of my bikes.

I,ve tried them all & the one that gets my bike on the back wheel the quickest is Shell V-Power.
Try it & hang on it gives it some sting.

Yep.
Although I do usually fill up at the Woolworths in town, but that's because I don't have to fuck around with the tyre valve connection.

I`ve tried them all, 91 pings, wont use it. All the 98`s are the same for me, sometimes you get a good batch, sometimes you get a bad batch. All fuel basically has a 2 week life, luck of the draw!!

Re: Fuel brand loyalty in question
The only reason I use 98 is that I find it helps (doesn't cure) with my carby issues in Winter. Other than that haven't really noticed any difference in performance or economy between ULP and PULP.

re fuel brand loyalty
Generally bp or mobil & sometimes caltex / I used to use shell but got pis^<d off with them trying to get me to buy " some of there specials " every single time I went in to pay (& all shell stations were the same) . It was worse than maccas with their do you want fries with that ! / no I would have asked for them if I wanted them ! Mind you I wouldnt not use shell if I had to; nothing wrong with their product , just coles`s marketing policy .Maybe petrol stations should have stayed petrol stations with mechanic/ Tyre repairs etc. & a bit of old fashioned service .
