Re: Coolant...
Gus - don't mix it with tap water, buy demineralised water from Woolies about $1.50 for two litres and it's usually in the aisle near the laundry detergents etc. It's cheap as chips and free from chemicals that you find in tap water, says on the bottle for use in car ( or bike) radiators.

Xtra cool is the go. Thats the concentrate. The gold or red is just a colour difference.

Re: Coolant...
Can be used in a variety of concentrations, if all you are after is anti-freeze/anti-boil, but if you want corrosion protection (and you sure do!) then you should not go less that 50/50. This is also the reason that you are buying concentrate in the first place ...'cos then you know what the mix strength is.

Re: Coolant...
Just mix it like the bottle says. Demineralised water on it's own works fine. The Glycol is only there as a rust inhibitor and anti freeze

Re: Coolant...
You shoudln't drink coolant mate. It is not good for you at all. I would have syringed it out, apparently it can kill you.
The hardest part is burping the system. I just did a few heat cycles, topped it up, took it for a spin. Came home and left the bike to cool down totally and double checked. It was all good. Happy days for another 25000Kms

Re: Coolant...
Coolant is bad for your body. I've seen one kind put a big hole in a guys tongue. He reckoned he could tell the strength by tasting it. Silly bugger.
Not knowing how big a bottle of nulon is, one bottle could very well do 3 litres at a 50/50 mix if it was 1.5 litre bottle. If it's at a 30% mix then that still OK IMO as it will go down to about -20ish degrees or somewhere there. The biggest thing is to not go over about 60% mix as it will start to cause problems for the cooling system and performance of the product
The coolant nowadays is not just about anti freeze it's also about anti boil (and corrosion protection). As an average most coolants will increase the boiling temps of water in a pressurised cooling system to about 120-130 degrees depending on product and mix ratios.

Re: Coolant...
I asked my mechanic friend today about different types of coolant .He recommended Repco brand Because it passed type A .what ever that is .
Cheaper than most at $21 for 2.5 litres of concentrate .While not wanting to start a "what is best "thing i did have trouble with so many coolants.

Re: Coolant...
does anyone know what the type a and type b bit is? i need to put some in i think [nothing in the expansion tank it would seem]. would i be right in saying that you just get a bottle of type a [?] concentrate that is ethylene glycol based and mix with the same amount of distilled water for a 50/50 mix and put it in?

That's what I do mate, an alternative is de-mineralised water. The 50/50 mix gives maximum corrosion inhibition (highly desirable) and maximum anti-freeze anti-boil (less of a consideration in OZ, like we are talking something like -30C),

Re: Coolant...
if all your doing is topping up then my suggestion is to use demin water only.
Unless you know for sure (like 110%) what coolant is in the bike it is uncool to use any for topping up as some coolants can react badly when mixed. Demin water will not do any harm and the worst it will do is dilute the mix a little.
When it's an emergency it's a different ball game and I've used some weird and wonderful stuff to keep going (from muddy water collected from a puddle to pis............... - well you get the picture.
