Radiator guard for Bandit
First topic message reminder :
I've been wanting to get a DECENT radiator guard for my bike for ages but don't agree with the zip tie method specials and just cant see the justification for $200 for the other type offered. I found this one on fleabay... http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=110677532041&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT

Re: Radiator guard for Bandit
I wouldn't be too keen to run alloy mesh on my radiator. I've had a headlight guard smashed in half on one of our rides and been hit in the knees quite a few times so I could just imaging what would happen to the alloy if hit at speed. My guard is made from stainless mesh.
4 years on and the radiator behind the guard hasn't suffered a single war wound.
I've seen a few victims on our rides where people stated "I've never holed a radiator in all my years of riding...."

Re: Radiator guard for Bandit
I made this one myself today, used less than 1/2 of a sheet of Grill Mesh ($25 a sheet), I think it looks the ok, mainly all I want it for is to protect the radiator on my trip to QLD next week

Looks good but if you havent already done so, please put some foam rubber around it.
You'll probably find the radiator quite a bit more delicate than the mesh when subjected to vibration.

It has flat washers between the mesh and the end cover mounts (also between the mesh and end covers), it doesn't come in contact with the radiator anywhere else.
Rad guard
I like the look of this one for my black motor. It is aluminium.

Bolts on top and sides.

This one bolts on bottom and sides. Looks like welded steel.
I'd like a welded S/steel painted black, that bolts on top, sides & bottom. Perhaps aluminium bolted 3 ways would be ok as well...

Tks Paul,
I ride daily & home in the dark this time of the year. The insects have been thick with the wet.
Here's my screened remedy for a radguard until I can decide, then purchase a proper one.
Am keen on some feedback re the flyscreen.
Made it this am.

Stainless Steel flyscreen might work though. The Warpspeed is a SS type mesh. Heavier that flyscreen though. Its got a few stone dents in it but none have impacted the core.

Can you get S/S flyscreen? I know that you can get aluminium flyscreen. Probably would work tho, if you could hold it out a few mm from the radiator

I made one out of a mesh waste paper basket for my last bandit.
Screwdriver, scissors, two coffees a few ciggies and an hour and it was all done total cost around eight dollars
However on my current bike I put the RadGuard in aluminium and it looks and works a treat .

Re: Radiator guard for Bandit
I have some crimsafe mesh to make a guard, just haven't gotten around to it yet. It is a stainless fly screen painted black and seems very sturdy, person I bought it off said I would need a few grinder discs to cut it up as it is very tough.
Anyone have any ideas for a shape or design? I haven't seen a guard before, and am not sure if I can bend the mesh.

If you can get some one to cut/bend it for you, this design has worked really good foe me, just fold the top and bottom to stiffen it, fold the sides around the sides of the radiator, put a flat spacer between the radiator and the gaurd, bolt the end caps back over the ends

Re: Radiator guard for Bandit
Like a lot of others, I made my own using mesh from the air cleaner of a Cat Dump Truck - cost NIL!
However I considered it very important to isolate the guard from the radiator and used a product called "pinchweld" from Clark Rubber. I recall it cost me around $5.00
It is imperative that the guard does not touch the radiator as I understand the metal is extremely thin and could rub through.
I understand a new radiator is worth $800-$1000 so every efort should be made to avoid such a disaster.

After looking at your post, checking out the product, I bought this through the ebay link for $95 including postage. Paid for it on 25 Oct, arrived 4 business days later today! And packed well to boot.
Took 5 minutes to install with a hex key and a socket set.
Thanks Ironman (& Evotech Performance)

Lane splitting is like internet piracy, general society deems it acceptable therefore the laws should reflect it, adapt and move on

Are you confusing "Splitting" with "Filtering"? Because I dont think your assumption is correct be it bike or digital related...........
