Spark plug recommendation Empty Spark plug recommendation

Post  step_andy Sun 30 Jan 2011, 2:09 pm

Hi there,
My 1250 will be due for 18K service in a few months. So, I have started to gather the essentials, like K&N air and oil filters from UK (both for $86 delivered)
Any recommendation for spark plugs? Any specific type or brand?

Any advice appreciated
Thanks
Andy

Mines not a 1250 but a 1200 k3 model.. I have always just used OEM (original suzuki) plugs from the dealer never had any issues so far.
you could always try and use something a little more exotic like NGK iridium plugs,
the below is for the 1996 - 2006 1200 bandit from the NGK website just as an example... but if you go to iridium plugs be prepared to pay extra for the privilege.

Spark Plug Part No. Plug Gap
Recommended Plug JR9B 0.7
Iridium Option DR9EIX 0.7

CR 7E are regular - traditional plugs.
CR7EIX are iridium

I thought about using these IR plugs too but think about this first...

They are designed for long life. That's why you pay the big $ or you can pay $4 per plug for OEM and get to replace them every 12,000km.
Now you may think what a PITA doing that, just throw the IR's in and be done with it. My train of though ended up being, hey save a s load of $, use OEM's and then you can also inspect the plugs every 12K to see how your engine is running, you get to inspect the coils for corrosion on the steel casing, and you get to look around the top of the engine to ensure everything is as it should be.
Just my 2 cents less GST.

I had them in my old bandit once ,ran just the same ,no better no worse .Anyone bother to "mark" the plugs so the gap faces the
inlet valve's ?

indexing plugs. an old trick that I haven't heard of for yonks. .
In my opinion I don't recon you'd get enough improvement to worry about the effort (and potential cost with washers etc) you'd need to put in to get it right, specially on today's engines

I used to do it in the GS1000E i had. Probably because i could see the tops of the plugs .Didnt use extra washers ,maybe Mad thats why
i blew a plug straight out the top of the motor. Mad

did hear storys of IR plugs snapping off at the head because they had not been removed for 80.000 /90.000 k. had basically welded to the head. they are fitted to my car and when I asked the "Service Manager" to check he said "old wives tail"..... he was not happy when I told him he would be paying if they snapped off later...Grumpy

Iridium pluds are the go I think. the point is to remove and inspect them every year or two. I've seen plugs weld into the head plenty of times due to lack of inspection. Iridiums will improve combustion too, maybe power too. Autolite ones are cheaper and can be purchased from holeshot.com for about $9.00 a pop.

i've used IR plugs in all of my bikes for yonks. no issues, when i do a valve clearance, i whip the plugs out, have a squizz at them and wack em back in.

Just asked my local for a price on 2002 bandit 1200S sparkplugs - $20.99 each
Google searched 2002 bandit sparkplugs and got a hit from Motorcycle superstore for JR9B $5.99 each.
I've only bought 3-4 items personally over the internet but I might be buying my sparkplugs from MSS on this occasion.

I've always run OEM plugs and FWIW the originals in my 1250 did 24k without a drama.

Yes same same. My thoughts exactly regarding the OEMs. Just gotta pull the old ones out ang get a P/N. Hopefully that will be the end of my Bandit not running smooth issues. Thanks.
