We jump started an SV650 with a dead battery and it ran fine. Cant see why a bandit should be any different - both have fuel injection.

as long as the alternator is working and supplying enough power for it to run

Im not shore if the bandit is the same but some bikes need power in the battery to generate power. one of the bikes ive had was like this and with totally buggerd battery wouldn't have enough juice to run the coils. Was still a carby bike and they mite just of been different.

Depends if the battery can still hold close to 12V. If your bike has ABS it will put a greater strain on the alternator. We once clutch started my mates Sigma using 8 D cell batteries taped together in series.

I'd be cautious with running the EFI bikes (or for that matter any EFI vehicle) with a shagged battery. I know others have jump started theirs with no issues, but I would not do it with my bike.
The battery acts as the voltage reference, how long it can keep the reference is dependent on it's the condition (and size). Once the reference is knacked, then the voltage levels can start flucuating, the regulator/alternator could start putting out voltage levels or worse voltage spikes that could fry the electronics in the ECM and other microprocessor controlled systems.
One of the main jobs of the battery (besides holding enough charge to start the bike), is to act as the voltage stabilizer, I'd hate to blow up a $1000 part for the sake of $100 battery.
With a proper running bike electrical system the idle voltage level should be about 13.8v, and at 5000 rpm the regulator should be putting out 15.5v.

If there is no short within the battery it will run but its not ideal if the battery is stuffed.
Thats a lot of work for the regulator to do.

If you jump start the bandit with a flat (as opposed to f$%#ed) battery then keep the jumper leads on for 5-10 mins to build up the base change in the battery before riding off into the sunset. Also remove the headlight fuze for the ride home/to work so that battery/charging system isn't doing too much work initially. This will help the alt and RR cope with the flat battery better.
If the battery is shagged than it's better to walk into supercrap, call the RAC or what ever and by a new one if you can.
