Hello there,

For those with a 1250, NOT 1200,  that have had their bike dynoed...

in what gear did they use, to get the figure that everyone claims!

I can't tell from the dyno chart (unless I missed something).

I think mine was in 4th, at least that's what is on the charts:

1250 people that have had their bike dynoed Dyno_t10

Brett from Moto did mine as well, but because of the big barge I have on the side he had to do it round the corner on his mate Jake's car dyno (hence why the RPM figures are out):

I'm not sure either. I'd say 3rd....... or 4th lol
The Dyno reads 209kph@9300rpm. But Gear Commander says 3rd should be 194kph@9300rpm.
Dyno's are like looking at fingerprints, all different. But Gear Commander does not allow for tyre pressure or centrifugal forces at 200kph. Witch opens tyre valve at that speed.

this is why I`m not a big believer of dyno`s.

you will get two totally different readings if a different gear is being used, and how much brake is being applied to the rollers to achieve a reading.

Each tuner will treat his machine differently, and nothing beats real ride time feel.

yeah its convenient, but I wouldn`t say totally accurate, you can easily get + or - 10 HP

Like any test equipment, you are hoping the dyno you go to is calibrated to a set standard and that the runs are carried out in exactly the same circumstances time after time.

I wouldn't say todays dynos are as bad as they were 10 or even 5 years ago, computer calibration has helped a lot, but setting up the same conditions is where I believe a lot of the differences (erorrs ?) come in.

However, if you start with 95 hp, and over a series of runs and fine tuning during the one session and eventually end with 135, it's a fair bet there has been a 40% improvement, and that is something you can definately feel with the seat of the pants.  Now whether that 135 is the same as someone elses, well that's why they invented beer Very Happy

Whilst a three digit power number is nice, my main purpose in going to Bret was to get the A/F ratio right over the rev range after all the changes I made.  This is where the dyno is the perfect device, changes can be made instantly and the results are a screen shot away.

I do agree with you as a percentage ratio, and this would be one`s own indicator of improvement from an individual tuner, not as a gospel HP figure

Well said Barry.

And to add more fuel to the dyno fire and I do believe Dynos are a very very useful Tools!
My Bike ran 123.36 on it's first run not the 122.48 that the print out says and the final run netted 132hp!
But, My chain was/is rooted and that caused the jaggered graph line on the printout which was smoothed out with a setting .
At the top of the printout you will see the setting SMOOTHING: 2 which straighten the line out a bit, Dropping 2hp.
I have seen a couple of dyno printouts from other bikes on SMOOTHING: 5

they do have there place, as its convenient rather than doing trial and error runs on a road,

but the true test is a 1/4 mile time.  even if your no star off the line with lighting reflexes, the terminal speed will be the indicator of HP,

at 130HP, this should give you a mid to high 10sec pass at about 125-130 mp/h

I'm missing something ...about 300 rpm, seem to hit the limiter at 9200.  Previous run was in 5th and went through to 9500, so have a sneaking suspicion he was using 6th this time.

From memory my pass was 11.04 at around 124mph will have to dig out the time sheet for better accuracy Smile

Now I sort of remember why Brett said my reading was down 5hp, it was to do with the rollers and the bike being tied in loosely because he had it on there for 6hrs. How tight you pull the tiedowns can really effect your reading I think he said. My chain was also rooted.

You peak power and torque are at the same points as my peaks mate. just hits the limiter early.
Is your torque in NM.

I see your Smoothing sitting: is on 5, So your lines must have been ruff too.

Ft-lbs for the torque.  Yeah, pretty sure it was 6th, the other plots all show 9500.  Dunno if Brett uses any smoothing option apart from 5.  Had a ride on DanBandit's bike and it felt similar to mine and he got 136.

Also in Canberra we are at 2000' and in summer we often see density altitudes around 5000'.  I know this is meant to be corrected, but seems it is widely believed that the SAE correction factors are quite conservative.
