Video Cam Question.
Heres one for you techno gurus like 2W and Thatotherguy. I'm thinkin' of buying one of those cheap HD mini cams to stick on the side of Rosie and record some video. How hard is it to download the video from the SD cards onto the computor or my tablet ? Do you have to join up with youTube or something to be able to put it on this site ? If I was out on the road 2W, would I be able to transfer it from the SD card to the tablet or would I have to run it through my computor first ? Cheers.

Re: Video Cam Question.
if the tablet has a USB port or an SD card port, then you can go straight from card to tablet, no dramas.
like photos, you need a website to host your video content, so a YouTube account or Vimeo. I think Photobucket does allow video content.
you can get some good basic HD cameras for under $100 set up, no bells and whistles. personally I just waited until T7 had a sale on the Contour Roam cameras and then bought a mount kit as well. if you go over to bicycles.net.au (bicycle forum) there is a good thread there with plenty of information about a variety of camera setups.

That's the Drift HD (my camera) knock off. I'm unsure what the quality is like but my mine and Jim C's genuine ones are rippers. Jim also uses a Roam.Hammy wrote:ThatOtherGuy wrote:if the tablet has a USB port or an SD card port, then you can go straight from card to tablet, no dramas.

I wouldnt be transfering video to the Tablet. Its possible but the files are huge and it will be slow. Much better to have a couple of cards and swap them out if on the road. Put them on the computer when you get home and dont reformat the cards until the next ride just in case lol.

Re: Video Cam Question.
Hammy I got one of those cheap drift knock offs for my birthday.
Juries still out on it.
First up the battery retaining clip was broken out of the box, but I managed to make one.
Video quality is quite clear but I think the colour is off a bit. Though this might be because of the sun being low and affecting the lens.
Other than that it seems to work ok
I'll post up the short video later

good point about file size, probably why I don't like tablets (or iPads), not real computers when it comes to this sort of stuff. give me a decent laptop any day of the week. I'll take the weight and size penalty just for the grunt I can have.

If you don’t expect a tablet to be a laptop replacement they are fine.
They have their place there’s no question about that.

Re: Video Cam Question.
I've used a couple of different cameras over my short riding life, but cannot go past the GoPro's.
Expensive yes, but easy to work with & reliable.
I wouldn't be moving data files to a tablet though. Ideally you need something with a bit more grunt, & yeah I agree tablets are pretty much toys.

Thanks for all the input Guys. I'm pretty sure I will just start off with one of those $100 specials and a couple of cards. Thanks again.

Re: Video Cam Question.
Yeah, I love my GoPro2. Starting to get cheaper too, With the release the 3 >>>$280<<<.
You will need a extra battery or 2, more then SD cards!
What size and type of memory card does the camera take?
The HD HERO camera supports SD/SDHC cards up to 32GB (any SD card over 2GB is considered a SDHC card). We recommend name brand SDHC cards, such as SanDisk, with a class 4 rating or higher.
How much recording time do you get?
Recording time will vary according to the resolution setting used and the card capacity. Here are the average recording storage times for a 32GB SD card: 1080p (30 fps): 4h 21m 960p (30 fps): 5h 26m 720p (60 fps): 4h 21 720p (30 fps): 8h 09m WVGA (60 fps): 8h 09m
How long will the batteries last?
With a single battery, you will get approximately 2.5 hours of continuous video recording time in mild and warmer temperatures. Cold temps will reduce run times somewhat, however the HD HERO camera helps to minimize this by transferring the normal heat generated during operation towards the battery.
If you use our Battery BacPac, you can use two batteries at the same time to effectively double recording times.
PS. I've had 4 cheap Cam's and they are shit!! From Battery's lasting 15-25minutes to fucked colour ranges.

Re: Video Cam Question.
ok whoa the bus. All three manufacturers have released new camera's over the last 2 months and i too am looking at buying a third camera. you can never have to many angles.
this my opinion on each one of them.
the Go Pro Black. very nice all the features, wifi remote, smartphone app, 4k Colour @ 15 FPS ( frames per sec) which means broadcast quality footage but for bike riding its useless need
25 Fps + to get smooth footage, also the higher the frame better you can slow mo stuff. the go pro does up to 120 fps in the lower resolutions
The gopro is great if you going to mount it on your bike. if you mount it to the side of you helmet its a big unwieldy thing. but the footage of the black is superior to it competition.
the thing i dont like apart from size and shape, the plus plus that so by the time you buy some of the basic extras and mounts its very expensive but i do believe it is the best for picture quality.
Contour have just released to new models the first on the Contour +2 which has the Smart phone app, waterproof case and GPS for geo tagging is about $549 Expensive but great if like to Geo tag your video with the GPS, Picture quality is nearly as good as the gopro but its only 1080p and up to 60FPS remote control and settings are via the smart phone app and the chassis is aircraft grade alloy these are tough little camera's. if that stretches the budget you can go to my fav the contour roam 2 what a awesome little camera i was lucky enough to win one and its great. slide the big button on an and recording slide it back and its off up to 60 FPS 1080p HD and it is only $269 and by a couple of mounts and you still have change out of $400
its very sleek and very light and glove friendly plus the roam 2 is water proof to 1 meter
Drift have released a new camera as well which makes 3 in the range , 1. the Drift HD720 $199 excellent value if you only want to shoot 720p HD 2. Drift HD1080p i have this camera whilst is not as good as the Contour Picture Quality wise it does have a lot of handy features like 10MP stills, time lapse 1080P & 720P and up to 60Fps, external mike connection, remote control, water resistant to a 1 meter plus some basic mounts in the box for $369 buy a couple of drift mounts and $450 will see you there. 3 Drift Ghost now this looks like a awesome camera and has everything i want in a action camera all the same as the drift HD but it has burst photomode, loop so can constantly record, 2 way remote, smart phone app for control. look its $499 but i rekon that it shits all over the others for useful features and price. its not been released in australia yet and it will interesting to see the real vision that it shoot but its my pic
As for what i like the contour roam 2 is the best for the helmet mount drift HD for the fixed bike mount, the Go pro i reckon is like the mchappy meal with out the toy to get the all the features you keep buying which makes it expensive. but it does have the best video quality.
I have added a clip i shot riding up mount buffalo there is 4 camera on 2 bikes but only 3 worked cause i didnt turn the helmet on oops
so on the duc we have a old model contour GPS and on my bandit i have a contour GPS mounted to the helmet and the contour roam on the mirror stalk and the drift hd 1080 to the crash bar
ps it goes for 15 mins man that road was created by gods
as for editing use a computer ( apple imovie or FCPX i recommend) make your clip then render it out for your tablet or phone
cheers i hope this helps

if you like bolting a little brick to your head thats awkward to use and costs a lot go the go pro, after all they did make 60 minutes, i might sell my drift HD and update it to a Drift Ghost and pick another contour cause there awesome

Re: Video Cam Question.
i had the gopro 2 on my helmet for many weeks & didn't think too much of it - until i took it off & mounted it to the bars.
i hadn't realised how much drag & perceived weight it added to the helmet.

Re: Video Cam Question.
I bought an el cheapo 5 megapixel camera from Jaycar $129 it seems to take a good movie but I'm trying out different mounting spots, on the tank I need a good 7 inches of ram mount extension to see out the windscreen and it bounces around to much. I might have to mount on the outside of the indicator mounts (i'm on a bmw) I really only wanted something cheap to use as a evidence gathering camera.
