How about this idea ?
First topic message reminder :
We all (well most) agree that it would be nice to have a coolant temp guauge .But really it should be built in which af coarse it isnt .
The fan comes on at 105 deg c .The red light (temp) comes on at 130 deg c .So when those two things happen we know the temp .
If you were to splice into the fan wires and run the wires to a nice light on the dash you would know when that light came ON the temp just hit 105 deg c
If the red light has not come on (as expected ) your temp is between 105 and 130 which is O.k.
Once you get out of traffic the fan light you have fitted should go OUT ,telling you temp is now dropping and bellow 105 .All is well
All for about $10 or less .
Any good ????

Just a small question why cant you remove radiator and have a fitting solidered into radiator tank to use a capillary type guage , thus not affecting any electrical system nor creating any voltage drop. Or any other problem.

Re: How about this idea ?
Hate to say it but i'm having second thoughts .
With the $4.99 light ,when its NOT ON i know temp is below 105 deg.
When light is ON and no RED light i know temp is between 105-130 deg
When light is ON and RED light is ON temp is over 130 deg. Dont expect to see that .
Do we need to know any more ? All i'm really interested in is that its BELOW 105.
No fitting problems ,less clutter , easy to hide and only $4.99.

Re: How about this idea ?
Now here's a plan Gus - Wire the light via a suitable relay so that when the fan (& the light) switch off, meaning things are cooling down a bit, the heated grips automatically switch on!!

Re: How about this idea ?
I know your not convinced about a fan light 2 wa . So how about this argument for it .
Your travelling at night ,one of the hoses starts leaking because the dog has chewed it thinking it was a warm licorice strap .
Fan light comes on, warning you their is coolant dripping ,and going onto your back tire . It could be another 30 mins before the temp light comes
on (hopefully it works ) and by then who knows what damage has been done .

Re: How about this idea ?
Looks good.. but a temp guage would be a far better idea I reckon. My fan hardly ever comes on unless I have it sitting in the shed doing a throttle sync.

Re: How about this idea ?
Sorry but your i have to correct you gus. The temperature sensors are up the top of the thermostat housing so if you are loosing coolant then the coolant level drops and then the sensors are exposed and will actually show a cooler temperature to the computer so your fan will not kick in

Oh no - I can already hear Gus' brain ticking all the way down here in Canberra - along the lines of: 'How can I move those sensors to the bottom of the radiator'.

Maybe turn the radiator upside down
