First topic message reminder :

After 4 days trying to fix my ruining problems of no power, top speed of 10 kph OR 110 kph and no acceleration. I traced the fault to the fuel pump assembly. Sometimes it would work, other times it wouldn't. Pressure was either good or poor. It looked like a dodgy fuel pump which Suzuki want $700. If i had taken it to a dealer they would have replaced the assembly which would have fixed the problem but cost me $1000.

I'm unemployed at the moment so that was out of the question. I doubt VERY much I'm the only person to have this problem in the past
or future.

Thanks I have had the same Issue checked fuel pump delivery ok cleaned out goes for a few days then plays up again will see this time how it goes back to the original fuel pump new strainer cleaned every piece out properly again thanks.

So I'm fairly sure the dreaded fuel pump issue has raised its ugly head. The bike is about to tick over 48k.

I'm thinking of attempting the fix detailed here but don't have a lot of experience with a spanner. Any wise words from some of the more experienced here that I should look out for or not forget to do?

Also should I go a tea strainers by itself or one of the pump/strainer combos?

Lastly is it worth throwing in some additive in the meanwhile?

Replace the strainer and clean the plastic filter out really good it will be fine

I recommend buying the $40 pump filter combo of eBay and replacing both. Worked a treat for me 25,000kms ago. And of course, scrub the mesh filter as Gus suggests in the first part of the thread.

It's very similar, just 1mm too large, so has a little play when sitting on the pump.

I've emailed them for a new one, hopefully I'm not off the road for long.

After the hassle of getting a strainer that didn't fit from Ebay (don't buy from felixa4), I have now replaced the fuel pump and an OEM strainer.

The old strainer was black and had a bunch of hair and other crap all over it. The secondary filter in the housing was black. Although all cleaned now thanks to this thread.

Bike started very easy and once warm seemed to rev freely. Looking forward to the first test ride tomorrow morning. ☺

Thank you Gus for your time in correcting this issue, definitely owe you a beer.

Bummer I spoke too soon. This doesn't seem to have fixed my issues.

Still idles a little rough and after a good twist of the throttle I lose a cylinder or two for a while.

I'm going to look at replacing spark plugs but does anyone else have any thoughts?

Or spend a bit more for a quality item from Repco ($80) The used pump in the front is from a tl 1000s . I have used 2 of these pumps with no problems .Comes with 2 tea bag filters .

Good Morning All,
my 2002 1200 (4 x carbies model) may have caught this fuel pump/filter illness. flat out getting to 60, missing, shaking, not idling but no backfiring or other issues.

I removed the tank to dismantle but realised the fuel still flows free from the pet cock.
Thought flow:
1. doesn't the fuel pump need to be running for fuel to flow
2. maybe this bike doesn't have a fuel pump and is gravity fed - tried google search but not clear on my findings

Question - does my bike have a fuel pump?

No fuel pump , that's on the injected models ...............could have been dirty or bad fuel ( water in it ? ) at your last fill up .
 ( make sure all your little rubber caps on your carbies where the vacuum hoses attach when you balance the carbies are not perished or have come off  )

I had a similar problem with bad fuel at Charters Towers in my 1200.
Before you rush off to the mechanic, I suggest you remove the drain screws from the carbie float bowls, try and catch the fuel and see if there is water in it.
In my case the left side carbie had the most water as I used to use the side stand a lot
The water will appear like bubbles in the bottom of the container.
If this is the case, drain the tank as well and refill with fresh fuel.

Worked for me Laughing

It happened to me twice on my old VX800, both times the fuel had water in it

You blokes are alright. I have actually changed the fuel no luck. I was going to check the spark plugs but before I took out the RHS I checked for sand/grit and the spark plug cavity was full of water/oily substance I am thinking water from rain we got a few weeks ago when we got smashed and the bike was on the side stand . . I am hoping it is just shorting through the spark plug - if that is possible. I will try all the above comments. The old girl is well and truly due for a service and tune so I may just take it to the mechanic to sort if it is much deeper than the above suggestions. Thanks Again Gents.

Just did this, easy as. Mine was very clean but the strainer was a little dirty. Cleaned up fine. 

The mesh inside looked spotless and nothing came out of it. So can ignore it for some time.

As I had to replace mine on the run recently (in Sydney) I took a photo of the package. Seriously the package should be gold plated!
