Speed Warning Signs
How much do you guys plan your corner speed by the speed indicator signs? For instance, if you're approaching, say, a 55kmph bend, do you consciously change down a gear aqnd bring it back to a certain entry speed? Or what? I don't profess to be a good cornerer, so I was wondering.

Re: Speed Warning Signs
The real answer is, It depends.
Most of the roads I ride around here I can add 75% comfortably. In my youthful days it would have been 100% However on roads I don't know I'm fairly conservative until I get a feel for the advisory sign/bend combo.
Some roads seem to be signed conservatively others not.
If you are not good on corners go practice somewhere or post questions here and we'll try to help. I'm no expert but I ride every day and I know that helps.

Re: Speed Warning Signs
I think it depends on where you are and your faith in the sign
From my experience
WA - meh, ride on and concentrate more on your actual speed IAW speed limits cause 'they' are everywhere
Vic - You could probably add 10-20 kph to what ever the sign says and still be quite comfortable
Tas - Slow the fuck down buddy cause there is a bend coming up and the people that put up the signs are pretty accurate
Other states I can't comment on
Disclaimer: I am not a road engineer nor am I an expert at setting speed advisory signs so take my advice with a grain of salt or pay the price

I think when they estimate safe speeds for corners they have to take into account all sorts of vehicles in various states of disrepair. For example trucks old cars with old technology and buggered suspension.

Re: Speed Warning Signs
I'm thinking "trick " question.
Am i going flat chat (well my flat chat ) or in tourist mode.
Either way on approach i'm thinking 55kls sign med-slow corner ,25kls i'm thinking super tight ,80 gentle curve.
Try not to "turn in" too early you get a better view through the corner.Use all (most )of your side off the road.
Even when i think i'm going fast people fly past me so i'm no expert.Main thing is not to fall off isnt it?
Sitting in the lounge room i wont even try to guess what gear i'm in.

Re: Speed Warning Signs
I couldn't say what gear or exact speed, other than do I know the road or not. I now err on the side of caution, but once upon a time would of been quite happy to take the Freddy Spencer approach to cornering. Now it's a case of slower in, check balance and conditions and squirt out, thankfully tyre technology now a days is kinder too. Teaching the youg blokes to drive I was at pains to have them no more than a 50 / 50 when corning in the dry, (slow & smooth is preferred...), wet completly changes the dynamics...

Re: Speed Warning Signs
You mean bikes can go around corners??
I see the advisory and make what adjustments needed. There's a few 55 corners that can be done at 100 and that's without crossing the centreline. Then there's a few corners marked at 45 but are really 25 corners in disguise

Re: Speed Warning Signs
Then there's the scenario that saw me and my RF900R part company
Coastal road nice sweeping bends nice rises and falls good straights between them all.
Swept through a series of 60km/h advises bends 6 or 8 of them approach the next one see the sign and tip in. What I didn’t see was this one was posted as 40km/h.
The road looked the same. The approach looked the same. I wasn’t paying enough attention
The only saving grace I have from that is the two local blokes who stopped and helped unwedge the bike from the tree said the corner catches a lot of bikes

Re: Speed Warning Signs
It depends.
If it's a road I'm familiar with I totally ignore the speed advisory signs.
This might sound strange but on roads that I don't know I use the advisory sign as an indication of how much I need to slow down.
I'll try to explain what I mean. If I've been scooting along comfortably at 100 and the corners are marked at 80, and there's a corner marked 60, then I'll slow down to 80. But if the corners are marked 50 and I've only been doing 60 and a 25km corner comes up, I'll do close to 25.
Other factors I consider are the condition/width of the road and the volume of traffic.

Re: Speed Warning Signs
Plenty of sound advice. If there are speed signs, I make a mental note not to enter the corner at more than 15kmph above the posted speed. So far, that has worked well although I feel a bit slow compared to some others. With no speed signs I'm even more cautious and probably pretty tardy but I certainly aren't aiming to be a GP rider. Where I have been caught out is when the road has been signposted and then there's a corner (or two) that is clearly less than a safe 100 kmph and, because every other corner has been posted, I have entered it too hot (for my liking) and probably done some mid-corner braking (which I hate). I must admit though, the Michelins give greater confidence that they'll hang on than the OEM Dunlops but I'm still not wanting to push them anywhere near their limits.

And that is why I don't play sport anymore. It got to the point where I was on the side line injured more than I was playing.

Re: Speed Warning Signs
In Queensland years ago the old rule was "double it and add 20", however that has changed a bit lately. I have run into enough sneaky corners to just slow down when I see the signs now.

Re: Speed Warning Signs
Advisory signs can be a bit random, with 80kph on wide sweepers and 55kph on very tight bends. I take the road as it comes. I do pay attention to crest signs and slow right down for them.

Re: Speed Warning Signs
In Victorian, am currently running 50% over corner advisory signs on new FA. I feel this is conservative (overall) but.. after a big stack 4 years ago and just hoping back onto a bike 2 months ago, I feel this is within my safety range.
My R6 was a serious light cornering machine and was more than doubling limits regularly but I was investing on regular courses, training and superbike schools etc..
Time to dust off Keith Code's -Twist of the Wrist II books/videos and deal with some of the Safety responses kicking in...
All fun and great learning journey if testosterone kept in check.
