This comment could probably go in the trivia section but, I've had a leaking bath tap that several plumbers and me have not been able to permanently repair or stop leaking, re-tapped the surface, tried several types of washers (not ceramic) works for a few months then slowly the leak reappears. 

So, getting frustrated, I put steel putty in the worn groove and re-tapped it. Expecting immediate failure but having nothing to lose, it appears to be working - so far. 
I don't know how well brass or copper plumbing fittings bond to steel putty, but until I meet Charlie, this will have to do.
