South Australian CTP
For decades the state government owned SGIC was the only CTP provider in SA
Even after the state sold off the SGIC the status quo remained the same for years.
More recently AAMI and ALLIANZ were added to the list of providers, the Registration Authority spread the policies amongst the 3 but the fee's were identical anyway.
As of July 1 this year we now get to make a choice based on cost and/or "customer satisfaction rating"
At this early stage it seems a positive thing for the consumer but I cant help but be sceptical that once the honeymoon period is over it will be just like every other privatised service in SA and prices will go through the roof, here's hoping this will be the exception.
I normally renew for 12 months, I'd heard this was going to save money so I only did a 3 month renewal in April, $131.90, 12 months would have been $498.60
I'm pretty happy I waited, when we renew our rego we get given 4 different options that are included on the renewal.
If we renew online we just tick the box next to the insurer that we chose. Apparently AAMI has been the cheapest option for private cars, SGIC is the cheapest for bikes over 660cc (metropolitan class)
The cheapest option is now $112.74 for 3 months/ $416.91 for 12 months (saving $19.16 for 3 months/$81.69 for 12 months)
Even the dearest 2 options at $118.07 for 3 months and $438.28 for 12 months are a lot cheaper than the previous regulated price (saving $13.83 for 3 months/$60.32 for 12 months)
Country and outer areas would be considerably cheaper than that.

Well we all know how well that system worked out for NSW. As you have already predicted prices will skyrocket in years to come

For comparison, this year my costs were: $398.10 for CTP + $130.00 for rego = $528.10 plus another $23 for a RWC (pink slip) as the bike is older than 5 years.
