Take your wife along shopping
I went to the big red church ( aka Supercheap Auto - everyone goes there on sundays) and noticed by total accident that they had 25% off store wide. RIGHTO! You Beauty!
First time I ever grabbed one of their pissant little trolleys to put all of my intended crap in. It's like one of those ones you give your little kids to push around Bunnings (big green church that everyone goes to on a Sunday). Anyways I head straight to the oils. Grab my fave flavor for the bikes. CHECK!. Now the cars... Looking looking looking... My immeasurably more attractive, intelligent and educated better half asked why don't I look for the most cost effective oil that meets the specifications you need rather than brand loyalty?
After mentally battling the notion of buying something other than my favorite it was thought to at least investigate this idea.
Well my Toyota will get by on pretty much anything SJ/SL within 10W-40, 10W-50, 15W-40, 15W-50 range. Mandy's Skoda is a little more fussy but when you read deep into the owners manual so long as it meets VW 502 / VW 505 you are on a winner. On the surface you would be filling it with full synthetic 5W-30 at $100 / 5lt. Trick was with the Skoda, some models have a variable service interval where the computer will look at how often it's driven, how far, ambient temperatures etc and it adjusts the service due time / distance according to some sort of algorithm. Our doesn't. That's where if you actually read your owners manual, you can find out this sort of interesting shit, and it can potentially save you $.
Walked out with Shell Helix HX7 semi-synthetic 10W-40 which meets the specifications listed and was $27.50 for 5lt rather than what I was going to buy because of brand loyalty for $35 I'm such a tight arse. Yep these prices were for 1 day only.
Never ridicule any of your Wife's choices or decisions.... remember you are one of them.

Well I'm impressed. Not the least of which that there are Supercheap Auto stores with trolleys (doesn't matter what sort). Not down here.

You're lucky you've got a Supercheap at all that far from the big smoke, not too many in Rural SA
My Supercheap has a couple of average size trolleys, the only couple of times I felt I needed to use one they were already being used
