Araluen Pub
Have you ever lived in a area but never been to some of its places, well today i discovered a little gem, the Araluen Valley.
The Good bits, the run from Tathra to Bermi as always, Clyde Mountain busy but fun, the run into Araluen, the nice old pub, the food and the gold mining history.
The Bits i didn't like, The highway riding, $4.00 soda waters and $4 Credit card eftpos charge, the traffic and the ignorant bastards who for what ever reason fail to keep left on overtaking lanes
Araluen Pub
Usual Jodi Beer shot
Plenty of Gold Mining
All in all great fun as usual sorry Tag and Ewok you couldn't make it.
Plus here is some obligatory video i shot going into Araluen please note that yes i overtook some cars on double line and yes i am a repeat offender.

A big group heading there next week!
Hey Jim
Great post! There is a bunch of folk from our St. George Sutherland Ulysses Branch heading there next weekend so I reckon you made your trip there at the right time! I would have been there myself but my bike is still being repaired after the abrupt end to my Tassie ride so I will be an interested observer to this ride.
I understand that the accommodation is a little limited in Araluen and I think that our Ulysses Branch has booked it out.
TT

Re: Araluen Pub
Thanks James, that's another place I'll have to incorporate in my next Southern loop.
Re: Araluen Pub
Do you know how rough the road is from Araluen to Moruya, it looks like its gravel most of the way according to Google. I'm flying into Canberra then driving to Moruya for a wedding in June and was wondering if this road was any good instead of the usual Clyde Mountain trek.
Re: Araluen Pub
That road is 4wd territory, Barry. Virtually a long fire trail.

Re: Araluen Pub
Thanks Tag, Google showed it as fairly narrow with lots of creek crossings, it needs to go down the same elevation to get to the coast, so I assume it gets pretty steep in places as well, not the place for a small 4cyl rental let alone a road bike.

That sounds like highway robbery!Jimcoleman wrote:

Looks like a nice trip on the map.

Commonly called The Nerriga Road by riders. (Braidwood Rd from Nowra to Nerriga then Nerriga Rd from Nerriga to Braidwood). Access by Albatross Rd or Turpentine Rd off the highway south of Nowra. Takes you straight through to Braidwood. It has been sealed bit by bit over 10 years to provide a second access from Canberra to the coast. Last time I rode it the sealing was still still 10 km short of Nowra but I believe its fully sealed now.
Once you have ridden it you will never again go down to the Bay and up Clyde Mountain.

Thanks #Tag!! I will go and have a suss and report back! I love roads with a little bit of dirt - means they tend to be that much quieter

I'll be interested in your adventure FF. That road is definitely sealed if you turn off and go through Tarago and Bungendore. But last time I was on it (about 4 years back) the Neriga to Braidwood section still had at least 27kms of dirt (mud when I did it - dropped the Bandit as a result). But that bit might now also be sealed. Good luck.

Did Baz fall on you?
A quick check of Google Earth shows Nowra - Nerriga fully sealed . Nerriga - Braidwood about 5k of gravel left.

so just 5kms. Please translate that to our space-time continuum. Are we talking 1 yr, 10 years, or 100 years. I'm comparing it to the sealing of the Bonang and the previous sealing of the Cann Valley Hwy!

Looks like DRZ/KLR territory! I wouldn't go near it on the Bandit in the wet.

Araluen ride - a tweek
Hi: I have not driven the road from Nerriga to Braidwood for long while but it was still pretty rough the last time I was on it; but there is a variation that you could consider. Turn off the Nerriga to Braidwood Road at the Oallen turn off that will take you on some fun roads. Go along to the Sandy Point rd turn-off follow that to the urn onto the Cullula rd on to Tarago (and the Loaded Dog Hotel). Then take the Goulburn rd back out onto the Kings Hwy and follow that to Aarluen. If you wanted to you add to the trip you can go via Bungendore and even more via Captains Flat.
