Would this be legal in Aus and is it a good idea

Not bad in principle , but you would need to watch out going into some driveways. Would you also need your bike wired as per trailer for brake light etc ?

Good on principal but I'd mount it backwards to save the trans and chain. Also we have a 120kg tow ball weight limit on vehicles up to I think 5 tonne.

Ball weight is 10% of the tow vehicle and tow bar capacity for a brake trailer.
