Role on Tuesday
As many of you will know on tuesday of next week it becomes legal to lane filter at speed below 30Kms
It was very surprising then to read in the Daily Smellygraph that the NSW police and the INSURANCE companies are opposed to this new law.
The reasons which have been sighted for this negativity are as redundant as the continuing arguments for not having day light savings (poor confused cows) Apparently motorcycles that lane filter and therefore get off the roads faster will not reduce congestion in any way???? also lane filtering poses a risk to pedestrians???
I would love to know where this stupid information actually comes from.
A full and thorough investigation by Loughborough University has actually proven to that lane filtering reduces Congestion FACT
But most of all my burning question is, If road traffic and congestion have not caused a significant increase to pedestrian injuries then how will lane filtering cause the increase as suggested? will the new law also allow for Jaywalking? will there be an increase in pedestrians who believe the new law applies to them and not motorbikes so we will see an increase in said pedestrians walking down the middle of the road in rush hour traffic? I believe the law clearly states that crossing a road outside of a marked walk way or crossing is ILLEGAL. so why is the fault being lain at the feet of motorcyclists?
Oh well bring on Tuesday i shall look forward to the new freedoms of NSW motorcyclists with great pleasure.
PS i am not intending to start any discussion or offend on day light savings. I fully respect each individuals choice and decisions relating to their beliefs on the matter, I just don't agree with them

Re: Role on Tuesday
More to the point ,what would be the statistics on rear end accidents involving cars running into the back of motorcycles sitting in traffic compared to those filtering ? ............reducing congestion is only a bonus .
If pedestrians are going to be hit by filtering bikes ,perhaps they need to open their eyes when crossing the road

For those who haven't seen it yet, here is the official primer on lane filtering.

Pretty much common sense & what most of us do already .
( The only problem I can foresee is agro riders thinking it their right to get through traffic when it isn't always possible & giving the rest of us a bad name )

Re: Role on Tuesday
Personally, I believe that it may be prudent to give it six to twelve months for the general public to get used to the new law before filtering with impunity.
I can envisage cage drivers doing silly things like opening doors. I still have a dint in my right knee cap from such an incident, more than twenty years ago.
Legal or not, filtering past all those lone occupants of cars stuck in peak hour congestion, will raise the ire of more than a few peanuts. "If I have to sit in the traffic and average 5km/h, why shouldn't you?"
I think the solution to congested roads is free registration of motorcyles. Get everyone on two wheels, when traveling alone, reduce pollution. Reduce congestion. Increase the joy in peoples lives brought by riding.
