Bloody modern technology !!!
So...........a few weeks ago , our internet connection kept dropping out& shat itself, followed a few days later by the computer dropping out as well big time .
After a trip back to the supplier & a hard drive wipe & a parade of telstra techs for the internet line we were back on line .............for 2 days...............then the computer went again .
Two weeks later we now have a new computer (product care insurance ...........hard drive had shat itself ) & hopefully our connection finally fixed .
Time to set up our new WiFi modem . Rang telstra ( they will do it for you at their end if you ask , with minimal input at my end .............WRONG...................the bloody thing would work for a few minutes , then refuse to open pages ( Sues tablet & the smart TV were fine though )................after a few hours stuffing around I rang Microsoft help line ........... turns out windows 8.1 can have issues with some modems ( which Bigpond are aware of ) and a bit of computer jargon entered into my settings fixed the problems .
It's amazing how much we rely on & use our computers for just about everything these days including receiving / paying bills etc , hence Sues shiny new tablet we now have ( which we ran off prepaid until our connection was fixed ).................Bloody modern technology !!!

A real computer needs only 8 bits:
If you ever worked on a 'Bee then you'd be smiling to yourself about how complicated this new technology is.

Re: Bloody modern technology !!!
I agree Barry.
I began with a Motorola 8 bit evaluation kit, progressing to a Commodore 64, Commodore Amiga, Apple Mac and numerous Windows PC's up to presently Windows 7.
I actually did some PDP-8 (or PDP-11) programming using punch cards. Now that was something to complain about.
I'm not convinced we have made things much easier for ourselves.
I think the Commodore Amiga and the old Apple Mac were very capable but progress saw their demise.

Re: Bloody modern technology !!!
Or lack of progress for Commodore. I still have a c64 and two Amigas. They were very capable machines in their day spewing the old disk drives have packed it in and you can't find reasonably priced replacements.
Windows 8 should be better when they release the 8.1 update 1. The start menu makes a return apparently. The Metro interface is absolutely shitful to use. Who decides a desktop OS should look like a phone.
If you want a free stable alternative give Linux a go. If all you do is web surfing and stuff like that then it's worth a shot.

Re: Bloody modern technology !!!
Actually my first PC was a Zenith 100 - it was the main stay of US Govt desktop computers in the early 80's. There was a deal where a Govt employee could buy the Z100 at the same price as the US Government, great deal at the time. As I was attached to the US Army in California for a couple of years this allowed me to qualify for the deal. The Z100 ran dual processors (an 8085 and a Z80), had 768K of RAM, a full height 10MB HD and twin half height 5 1/4 inch floppies, video was 16 colour CGA. Operating system was the original MS-DOS and it could emulate PC-DOS (the IBM-PC only had 640K RAM) in higher memory so this allowed you to run all the IBM-PC programs. Had an S100 motherboard with 8 spare slots after the memory, video and HD/FD drive cards. I later picked up an older Altair 8080B with twin 8 inch floppies, these doubled the capacity of the 5 1/4's, 720K per disk.
As for the VIC-20 and Commodore 64 (and the later 128), these were great "little" machines, especially with the internal Basic language. We visited a company called California Microwave back in the mid 80's, they actually used heaps of VIC-20's to run their test beds for checking out US military satellite up and down convertors, a fraction of the cost of the HP products available at the time.
Them's were the days.......

Re: Bloody modern technology !!!
Windows 8 has a desk top page you can put short cuts on , as well as the start page .................mine is the 8.1 version, but the start button menu isn't like the windows 7 one .Its just a matter of sorting out how to access stuff for the first time & to reset the default programs you want to use . If you are on the start page and just start typing what you want , it will bring it up in a list , and then you can click on it to access it . Basically it's like two operating systems working in parallel with about 3 ways to access stuff .reddog wrote:Or lack of progress for Commodore. I still have a c64 and two Amigas. I'm a recent Mac convert and I'm about to buy my second Mac. Probably a MB Pro. Why? Because they do what I require and work with the software I want to use.

Re: Bloody modern technology !!!
I took the leap to Macbook Pro 18 months ago. Very happy with it, though I was frustrated at first because I knew NOTHING about how to run it. Within a couple of days I was happy. Bought a tablet for the missus to use around the house, last Spring and finally a big screen iMac for the desk. Migrating all my stuff from the old PC was and populating the IMac and Macbook with what I wanted was easy. Organise the shares display all drives (4, including the external [backup]) on the big screen and copy away, through the wireless router. Too easy, no need to understand much about networking at all. Nothing to connect. Just share the drives. Call me old fashioned but I don't use the cloud.2wheelsagain wrote:I'm a recent Mac convert and I'm about to buy my second Mac. Probably a MB Pro. Why? Rationalle? I no longer need work compatibility, and I'm still impressed with how slick this gear works.
Minuses? only one or two - the need for third party support for media files - I use VLC. (free download) and it took me a while to get my head around how pics and video files are handled by iPhoto.
Some surprising things - the Macbook Pro has more poke than the iMac, but I much prefer the bigger screen. How good these things are at just using what's plugged into them - legacy hardware will run (printer, scanner) without doing anything, and there is no need to do anything more than share the printer - the computers will share peripherals wirelessly.

I'm running Office for Mac and it runs better than on Windows. Probably something to do with 64 bit OS
I run Office because I can get it for $15 through our work license. Yep genuine full blown MS Office for $15

Re: Bloody modern technology !!!
Well I hadn't gotten around to buying a Macbook Pro yet and Melody went to Melbourne for the weekend and attended a convention at the show grounds.
She txt me yesterday afternoon to say she had won a 13inch MB Pro with Retina screen!
On review of the specs later its the same machine I was going to put my cash down on.
Thats actually the second laptop she's won. The other being a Toshiba 4yrs ago.
I'm going to get her to enter a motorbike comp next

Do you need balls to ride this ??
Been pretty quiet today so I was browsing the net and saw this, looks like a cross between a bike and a computer mouse, and its 6 "wheel" drive .....
Not sure of the practical use but sure is thinking outside the box.

Nothing wrong with Android Paul, you can run heaps of cool stuff iDevice owners wish they could. The Macs run Linux these days anyway so I wouldn't be too hyped up about the whole Mac vs Windows. 8.1. With classic shell i8.1 actually works quite well. I'm also not for the cloud, got a 6tb Qnap NAS on a gigabit network. Beats the hell out of wireless any day. Unfortunately I live out the boonies so don't have a flash nbn or adsl connection so ridiculously priced wireless internet costs mean no torrents for me either.
