Phone numbers
2014-01-26
REMEMBER: Mobile Phone Numbers Go Public next month.
REMINDER all mobile phone numbers are being released to
telemarketing companies and you will start to receive sale calls
YOU WILL BE CHARGED FOR THESE CALLS
Below is a link where you can enter your phone numbers online to put
an end to telemarketing calls.
Don't just delete those calls
otherwise you will find that you have been signed up for all sorts
of extra services that you didn't want or know about. Like special
chimes, music etc.

You can't and wont be charged, 2W.
It's a hoax email aimed at the US market where they have different charging schemes for mobile phones than we do.

Re: Phone numbers
There are still ways of being ripped off here ....some time ago , I was sent an text & offered a prize if I answered a question correctly . ( I got it wrong . )
After that , I received quite few more texts from them ,but deleted them all without even opening them as I realized I had been charged for the first text & didn't want to pay for any more.( they were quite expensive )
Next thing I knew , I was out of credit ( prepaid ) , & after a call to Optus , I was informed I had " subscribed " to this mob because I had replied to the first text & therefore had entered into a contract with them to receive ( & pay for ) more texts from them ......even unopened ones ! I then went back & read the fine print at the end of the first text & yep , apparently I had ( in a twisted way if you knew what you were reading & the context of it .) I then had to text STOP to the said mob to stop receiving any more texts & break the contract .
Glad I was on prepaid , & sorry I didn't read the small print .........................lesson learned ( I hope )

Re: Phone numbers
We had one of our work mobile phones pinched and a number of rouge calls made on it before it was discovered missing. We blocked the phone and cancelled the simm but we were still being charged by a number of these text subscription services.
Contacting the companies as well as the carrier to explain the situation amounted to nothing, the charges kept on coming. In the end we had to get another simm made up with the old number and then used that to text "stop" to finally get out of the "contract".
Luckily (for us) the police actually tracked down and charged the thief as he called his home and friends numerious times on our phone, silly git.

It seems common law & common sense don't always apply with mobile providers

Re: Phone numbers
It seems the don't call register doesn't work. I still get telemarketers calling the home phone.

I've only had a couple , & one mention of the do not call register had them hanging up straight away. .............I still get the survey ones too though ( who still seem to have something to sell half the time LOL ) It's a loop hole that needs to be closed .

Re: Phone numbers
In the UK they have a system where you can purchase a premium number that costs people to call and you get a cut of the cost.
There was a report of a guy so sick of telemarketing that he purchased a number and now makes money out of their calls. The longer he keeps them on the line the more money he makes.

Now I like that, "hang on a minute I'll just go get my dad" (said in a childish voice) then come back 15mins later.
