Post  captbruce Mon 20 Jan 2014, 10:29 pm

I'm captbruce,
I'm a fishing guide in Key West, Florida.
(almost 40 years guiding), I'm 65 years young.
I've owned 50-60 bikes, and I work on them myself.
I currently own three. '93 Kawa KLR 650; a '07 Kawa Ninja EX650R, and a '07 HD 1200 Sportster

I just acquired a 2007 Bandit 1250, with 15k mi.
It is NOT running.

The PO removed the PAIR system, and said it surged at low speed, so he removed the airbox and went to velocity stacks, that made it worse
so he installed a Power Commander III. and it blew a fuse when he tried to start it, the FI light stays on, so he put it up for sale and after a long while I finally bought it.

Anyway I'm trying to bring it back to life.

Without being too harsh on the PO... He also "Ratted-Out" (his words) the bike to make it look like it was in the movie "Mad Max" or something.

I took some pixs of the bike when I got it to my house.
Which "picture Host" do you guys favor ?
I went to my old reliable PHOTOBUCKET, and found I lost half my pictures and can't "link", with them anymore.

I just thought I'd introduce myself.
I have more to ask, but I will do that as I start "De-Ratting", this Monster, on the regular forum.

BTW, The PO also said you guys had the best Bandit Forum.

Stay Safe,

Welcome to the forum Capt Bruce

The PO was right, this is the best forum.

Madmax style eh? sounds like my sort of bike  Laughing

The FI light would be one because he removed the pair system. to do it right you need to install a resistor to trick the ECU into thinking the pairs it still there.
Most of us just block off the pairs tubing to stop the popping

What I do is go back to square one and once it up and running then start modding it

If you want to add pics I still use Photobucket, I don't have a problem with it. Some of the guys use Picasa. Whatever you prefer

Welcome aboard.
The PO sounds like he listens to too many mates!
Anyway his amateurish game is your gain. I don't even have the pairs blocked off and not worried about the occasional pop.

I use photobucket too. The mobile site is a bit difficult to use but the full site is fine.

Im on a couple of Superhawk forums and our site is far more active. Stick around mate.

Welcome to the forum buddy.  Will be keen to hear how your restoration progresses - be sure to do some before and after pics and post them up.  Wonder if the PO even did a throttle body balance before he decided to go for the velocity stacks.  I think 2WA is on the money suggesting too many well-intentioned "knowledgeable" friends over influenced the poor bugger.

Hey Bruce.
Mad Max was just on tele last night. It was an ugly bike, but not as ugly as the one Deborah Lee Furness rides in the movie 'Shame'..lol

Hello SBA forum !! Empty Thanks, Mates !!

Post  captbruce Tue 21 Jan 2014, 12:27 pm

Thanks for the hearty welcome.
I finally got to the OLD photobucket with the "Chrome" browser (IE11 can't find it).

Oh No, I can't post pixs for 7 days...

anyway...
I paid $500 for it with a clear Florida title.
I can't wait to hear it RUN !!

It has NEW Bridgestone tires on it also.

I tore into it today and found wires hanging, and unconnected Connectors, and some real oddities.
The coils weren't even on the plugs cause he didn't un-screw  the caps off the threaded tips.
I could look and see the coils were sitting up too high out of the valve cover.
After I fixed that I knew it was gonna fire-up but still no luck.
There is NO SPARK !!

Will a flashing FI light shut the brain down ?

I will post something of the mechanical part of the forum and see what happens.

Ride Safe,

A mechanical and electrical challenge!  We like that.  Welcome from the Kiwi contingent, and welcome to the forum.  I suggest getting a manual so you know what voltages should be where.  It's all fixable with patience.  Suggest you remove the PC3 and get it back to standard and we will diagnose it for you.  Can't wait to see the pictures.

Hello SBA forum !! Empty God, love you guys.

Post  captbruce Tue 21 Jan 2014, 10:16 pm

Thanks,
I've always wanted to go to Australia.
I may have to do it someday.

Anyway,
I have the manual given to me by the PO
It looks like the original "Shop Manual" that's a black "loose leaf" binder about 6" thick.
Reading the phrasing in it, you would think it was translated directly from the Japanese language.
I also downloaded the PDF. it took awhile but I found one.

I removed the PCIII already.
I fixed the spark plugs and coils
It has the Iridium plugs in it.
NGK CR9EIX, they look like they are very new, with just a little use.

I need to install the resistor after a PAIR removal.
I'll keep searching the forum. I'm sure it's been discussed.
There is a two wire connector lying on the left end of the valve cover,
the wires are orange with white stripe and black with green dashes

Oops, still can't add pictures

Can a flashing FI light short-out the ECU and cause a "No Spark" situation ??
Do I have to start at the Pulser, and start my resistance checking ??

BTW it's 6:10 AM Jan. 21st right now.
I'm just wondering what the time difference is there.

Gotta go fishing !!

You have the right connector CB, this is where the resistor would be pluged in to simulate the PAIR Soleniod.  You need a heavy wattage resistor (those gold rectangular ones - about 50w I think) of approx 20 ohms (specs on page 1C-7 of the manual).

I doubt the FI light is causing your problems, I believe the ECU is telling the FI to light up as it senses something wrong in the fuel injection system, so it could be any one of a number of things.  The fact you have no firing at all is actually a help as it means the problem is something common and not a single plug/coil/injector.

Did you mention the secondary butterflies were removed ? If this was done it means the throttle bodies (and associated wiring loom) has been removed from the bike at some stage,  I'd be pulling apart all the wiring plugs, spraying them with an electrical solvent cleaner and reseating them.

BTW your time difference is 8 hours ahead but a day behind - thats the easiest way I used to remember it when I worked in California awhile back, i.e. it was  about10:10pm here on Tue night when you sent the post..

Cheers.

It rained here all day yesterday but I started early this morning.
I am very anxious to hear this Beast fire-up !!

When I first jumped the two wires on the test plug, and turned the ignition it read Fl then it flashed and read -C-23 (tip-over sensor)
Can that be grounding the  spark system ??

I still need to find the right resistor for the removed PAIR
The PO installed a TPO kit, but it did not have a resistor.

I'm gonna jump over the the MECH forum and start a new thread.

Thanks, for everything.

I might be wrong but I believe the tip over sensor does the same as the kill switch

And the sensor should automatically reset when the bike is up righted so I suspect the sensor has been removed or disconnected.

I bet the original owner has put it in upside down. Find the sensor and spin it around 180 degeees

here's the sensor

Yeah, The PO put it back upside down.
I pulled it out from it's holder and set it on top of the battery with "UP" facing up and she fired right up.
That was a relief to hear it run.

I have it running, although barely, the #1 and 2 cylinders are not firing.
I warmed it up a little to change the oil and filter and the two left pipes didn't get hot like the other 2 cylinders.
I will try new plugs first, it had the Iridium NGK's but I will replace them with a set CR7E
It won't run if you let go of the grip.
It will idle though down to 800 rpms, but when you let go of the grip it stalls.

The fuel pump is running even with the key OFF.
Every time I shut the engine off I have to unplug the fuel pump.

So NEXT on the list:
Get cylinders 1 and 2 firing, and find out why the fuel pump keeps running.

I'm gonna start a thread in the Mechanical section soon.
Thanks for all your help.

Well that is some good news. It sounds like the original owner made a right mess of the bike. I would try swapping the plugs into the running cylinders. I am guessing there is an electrical connection issue. Are you sure the injectors are firing in the non running cylinders?

Failure to idle can be the IAP disconnected.  It's the small black square unit under the tank on the right with an electrical connector and a vacuum hose to the lines connected to the throttle bodies.  It should throw a C13 fault if so.  Do you have other fault codes showing?

Running on 2 cylinders is enough to stop idling. I'm with Reddog if the tip-over was upside down then it's probably something simple like leads the wrong way round.

Hello SBA forum !! Empty Update Feb. 6, 2014

Post  captbruce Thu 06 Feb 2014, 9:58 pm

I had the bike two weeks now and things are going GREAT !!
My wife just arrived, with my vacuum manifold. I will do a TB sync soon.

I soldered a 10w 330ohm resistor and the FI light has extinguished !!
I now have a _C00 code so I need to adjust the TPS and TB sync.

I finally got some time away from fishing and rode the bike around the island, and did some errands while I was at it.
It starts and run great. (except for the 800 rpm idle)
The new Bridgestone BattleAx tires (came with the bike) run smooooth !!

I took a picture, near the "Southernmost Point"

Hello SBA forum !! 972

The bike looks a far sight better now with almost no sign of the artistic hi-jinks, of the PO.
When I arrived home the sprocket cover was in the mail and was installed.
It needs new mirrors, (I'm trying to find the proper ones, with turn signals, on eBay), but I have to live with the butchered fairing for now.

I also have an airbox coming.
I lowered the seat 1" for a better control when stopped.
I'm kinda "inseam challenged".

Thanks for all your help. EVERYONE !!
