That's the way I read it too, bit like if you only catch a train one day a week , you are 7 times less likely to be involved in a train accident than someone who catches one every day  Rolling Eyes
( although I do think in general we are more aware of what's going on around us than non riders )

I dont think there can be any argument that as riders we're more alert and conscious of our surroundings behind the wheel.

exactly right, as riders we are generally more aware of other riders whether we are riding or driving
